How do you get the hands to be infront of the ball, and in front of the clubhead at impact? No matter how much i try i can't get a feeling of holding that wrist hinge through impact. I think some of it is playing years of golf with the golf ball back in my stance. I noticed this today at the range hitting driver, the only club i hit off mats. The mat had an alignment cross, and i noticed i put the ball something like 4-5 inches behind my front foot. So i think alot of that was drilled over the years of having to hit the ball way far back in my stance.

Do you think just moving the ball forward will help, is there some drills to get the hands ahead of the ball at impact, preferably near the front leg.

for me, i had to really ingrain the feeling of driving the hands thru impact, and loading the pressure in my right index finger.  of course, i still flip regularly, but that thought helps.

I've tried a lot, most of which didn't work. Trying to hold the wrists definitely did not work. Some things I got results from:

Swinging the hands faster. If the hands don't move fast enough, the club will always catch up.
Not taking a too long backswing.
Keeping a steady head.
Getting my weight forward (hips and left knee) on the downswing.
Taking half swings, focusing on getting the hands at my left pocket at impact to find the feeling of a good hit. Just hit balls where you are 100% sure the hands area leading the clubhead. Knowing how it should feel is useful when you are working on this.
Exactly what you have to work on depends on what your swing looks like today.

Well my golf swing consists of deep hands and a clubhead that gets stuck behind me. I guess i figured this when i was hitting hooks and pushes on the driving range the other day, i haven't hit a duck hook in a while.. When i am at home, at night i used my patio windows as mirrors, when it gets dark out you can see the reflection. My clubhead is severily behind me. So i am working on getting that better.

I am big over swinging, beenig working on that.

I'll give a few of these a try. I think the key will be, just to spend alot of my time mimicing the impact position, focus on getting the feeling of my hands in that location.. I might have to limit my alignment to a single ball position and vary my back foot, it might help me out with stabalzing my hand position at impact. I have a really bad problem of playing the ball back in my stance, usually 4-6 inches back for every club.

I've always had the same problem throughout my entire golf career. It's very difficult to hold the angle and keep the hands in front at impact.

I've been getting better with it recently though.

Get yourself "The Secret by Greg Norman". I have it and it's great for training your wrists at impact. It's a little weird at first when you put it on. With it on, at address, it's hard to keep the club straight. So what I do, is start with the club already cocked at 90* with your arms down straight. Then just bring it up from there, and then a normal downswing and hit the ball.

Then take if off, and hit a few shots. Then put it back on, etc, etc..

Sounds like key #1 and key #2.

practice pitch shots with your stance from your normal swing.  Make sure your left wrist is flat at impact...you should also feel the angle in your right wrist.

This is a great drill for practicing your takeaway and impact position...and it also makes you good at chipping if you do it enough.

    • I have an update… I don't have much of a response, because the fact that they would ADD the numbers for the lead and trail shoulder together… I mean, wow. I was giving them too much credit. Nobody would think to assume they were doing THAT. That's beyond comical. One of the biomechanists I talked to put it this way: "So if I squatted down and went from 180 to 90 deg knee angle, then I would say 180 deg range of motion because I have two knees?" I'd type more (maybe), but honestly, I'm laughing a bit too hard. 🤣 Update: Mini Manavian blocked me on Instagram, so I cannot see his post showing Bryson with about 50° of range of motion (with a driver) from P4 to P7, and 75° only if you go out to the mid-follow-through. What a terrible loss for me. 😉
    • Thanks, interesting to read. The swing is definitely very timing dependent. I hit it consistently I guess but consistently bad.
    • I've shot 91-74 on the same day before. Couple of years ago played a two round tournament on Bethpage Black. I shot 72 in the first round and 90 in the second. First round I played very well. Second round I played okay, but had about 5 shots that hit the lips of bunkers and bounced down into them. A couple of those wound up in footprints - I was unamused - and I failed to get them out. Anyway - lots of bunkers and my bunker play isn't great and then add a couple of footprints and me getting pretty tired and it added up to a lot.  Only you can really tell though what's causing the variance. It might be that your swing is very timing dependent and when it's timed well you play well and when it's not then it goes all over the place. In that case, some lessons and working on your swing could be the key. If it's more that you tend to feel like you hit it fairly consistently, but you have days where the shots come off and days where they don't, then that's more likely a course management issue. If that's what you need to work on, then you could read Lowest Score Wins and build a plan of attack based on that.  Rest assured though that a pretty big range from high to low is fairly common. Even PGA Tour players often have 18-20 shot spreads from best to worst rounds in a season. It's a common affliction among golfers.
