You crack me up lamebums

Eh, read closer. Average pro from 20 years ago, before the advent of three-layer balls, oversize titanium driver heads, etc, etc... 280 maybe 1 out of 10 drives, and almost never in the fairway.

Lamebum here, I can crush it 300 (sometimes even in the fairway) and I can hit it 180 (sometimes not in the fairway) with a driver.........probably is, the only time I hit it 300 is when the fairway ends at 280 and there is a creek in the middle....

Ditto. I've learned, if you want hit a club as far as Tiger Woods or John Daly does, just try to lay up short of a water hazard.

"Shouldn't you be going faster? I mean, you're doing 40 in a 65..."

Gotta be distance. Least at my course, and around here. My boss was talking to me about how he hits the ball all over the place and is just really inconsistant, and then a person asks him how far he drives it and he says he avg's 300yds. Thats rediculous.

I just wish people wouldnt lie, just cause it hurts them a lot. How do you know what you need to work on, or how to fix some faults if on every round youre lying to yourself, and everybody else, about score, etc.

Another is iron distance. Just because a hacker has hit a 6 iron 200 before he thinks he can do that every time. And when he pulls his club and hits it and comes up 25 yards short he can't figure out why.

Only 25 yards short? C'mon, most of them are gonna be 50! I love watching a guy on a 515-yard par five wait for the green to clear from 300 yards. Do the math, dude: your drive went 215. I agree the most common lie is distance. It's the single easiest way to lower your handicap, too: know your actual distances and stop lying to yourself.

I average 'bout 210 when I hit it really really really good. My longest is 280, dry, down hill. with a 30mph helping wind. I could tell anyone I can hit it 280, but I only did ONCE UPON A TIME. Isn,t that the start of most fairy tales?

With casual golfers definitely score and distance.

I play mostly club tournament golf these days and most of the folks are really honest about their score and their distances.

When I am just playing with the random people, especially the 4 times a year, 30 handicap, it is score and distance. When I talk to my dad, he sounds like a 10 handicap, always shooting under 40 on nine. Splitting fairways, bombing it 300 off the tee. Then when we play he is lucky to break 100 for 18, rarely gets it over 250 off the tee. And shoots a ton of doubles/triples that are really quads or worse.

I used to be just as bad until I took golf seriously. Now I know my distances fairly well, and I play by the rules and score by the rules. It makes a difference.

I would have to say, one, distances people hit with their clubs, and two, how many strokes they had on a hole while playing. I am by no means a big hitter and I can deal with it. Played today, and on the 17th (a 190 yrd Par 3), my playing partners pulled out their 5 irons, missing the green, and I pulled out my 3 Rescue Hybrid. I got a big red 2 on the hole...the scorecard doesn't reflect on which clubs you use to get the score, my ego isn't bruised if I use a little more club to get that score either :)

I'll go with distances, but it's not even those that hit 300 yards. I have a buddy that routinely tells people he hits his 3 wood about 240 and it really ends up being closer to 200 on average and his drives go over 250, but that is about 2 out of 10 times.

Amen. When I embraced the reality (after blowing out a couple discs in my lower back years ago) that I can't hit ANY fairway club more than 200 yds, I readjusted all my club selection thoughts and have played much better. I'm usually a couple/three clubs longer in selection than most of my playing partners, but I rarely miscue on yardage from inside 200 yds, while they often come up short.

Yeah, definetely distance. I know ONE person out of everyone I have ever played with who can consistently hit the ball 300 yards. He didn't even boast about it. I know I'm lucky to get near th 250 mark with my drives, I average about 210 on a good day. However it is funny playing with the guy that can hit it 300 and two others who say they can. They step on the first tee hit their shots and say "That's easily 300". Then the other guy steps up and knocks it 70 yards past them. Absolutely price

Without a doubt my favorite thing to witness on a golf course. Waiting for the green to clear on a par 5 when they are 300 plus yards out. I have been known on occassion, to go ahead and lay up with a iron, just to get within distance so they KNOW I am watching....almost without fail....they will top a ball 50 yards down the fairway........and I just have to laugh.

Not only do I agree about score, but especially in a 4 man scramble. Me and 3 other single digit handicappers got beat in a 4 man scramble. It was raining, cold and a 30 mph wind. We shot a very impressive 66 (for the conditions) A group of 4 thirty-something handicappers said they shot a 57 (without their handicap included). Funny, we saw them take 3 doubles and about 6-8 bogeys as they were playing in front of us.

I had that happen to me. I was playing in an outing and I put a good group together to shoot a 61. The carts at this course had GPS and you put the scores in as you go so at the end it prints out the sheet. It also had a leader board, which is a bad idea. We were the third from the last group. The last group won with a 60. Go Figure. One of my teammates was pretty mad. I told him that if that's the way they want to win, fine. They have to live with themselves.

Most common lie has to be " Honey I'll be working late again tonight "

I also agree with the par 5 hopefuls. If you only hit your drive 220 no way you're smoking that 3 wood 310 to the hole. Hit the ball already.

In our tuesday night league the first hole on the back 9 is a 410 yard par 4 with a tight fairway that runs downhill into a creek about 90 yards from the geen. My opponet tops his tee shot about 50 yards, hits his second and advances the ball another 50 yards. He still has over 300 to the hole and he is waiting on the green to clear!! Hell he still needs to hit it 220 to clear the water comfortably. Inevitably we wait 5 minutes for the green to clear and he hits this beatuiful screaming 3 wood about 6 feet high straight into the creek. Only way could have been better is if he told me he made bogey instead of 8.

Not really playing that much....always from the guy whos out every day!

This irritates me the most. I played with a foursome last week for the first time. One guy told me he just started playing 3 months ago. He said he got his clubs from his dad and that he's only played 5 rounds total. So we go out there and he gets five par's and scores pretty decent. I know that's not a course record, but it's much better than any 3 month beginner I know.

I've had a few guys question whether I really only started golfing last August. It's true, but I've played an awful lot in that time, especially in the winter time because only the hard-core golfers and me were out.

I have to add a second of my favorite lies though some other folks have already mentioned it. The guy who takes three shots to get close to the green, skulls it across the green and back, finally gets on the green, three puts and then claims a bogey. LOL, yea it's a bogey if it was a Par 8 maybe. hehehehe Between fishermen and golfers I don't think there's a truthful one in the lot.

I enjoyed reading this thread. Lots of lies out there!

The #1 lie has got to be distance. I continue to be amazed how many "300 yard drivers" I can outdrive with my 240-250 yard tee shot. Whenever someone starts telling me how far they hit it off the tee then I know they are lying. The truly long hitters don't have to tell you...

A close second has to be score. It's unbelieveable how many great golfers are hanging around the bar after their round. I've played with people before who on average probably shave a stroke a hole. Shoot an 85 when it should have been a 103. Then it comes to club championship time and many of them do not enter and the one's who do are the 7 index players shooting in the 100's. LOL! Again, to quote Chad Champbell, if you have to tell everyone how good you are then you probably aren't that good.
