Hey guys

Yesterday I was watching the crowne invitational and saw Dufner throw in a huge lip after he hit a wedge to like 5 feet. The lip was a solid fourth of the tin. Now I was just wondering does anyone use tobacco products on the course? I use to dip a lot when I played baseball but have since tried to cut down. When I am on the course though I do snus which is spitless tobacco. Seems like it would be a dick move to do scoal or grizzly and be spitting on the course.

I played with an older gentlemen one time and he seemed almost offended that I was dipping on a golf course. Mean while he was slugging down beers like they were going out of style. So is it really that bad to use tobacco products on a golf course?

This is, of course, a personal issue and I'm sure that you will get many different opinions.  My personal view is that when I go to the course I enjoy the fresh air and being outside.  I feel that "dipping" is much less offensive than smoking.  To me there are few things that are worse than enjoying the outdoors then having to smell someone smoking nearby.  There is a gentleman that I have been grouped with a few times recently.  He is very pleasant to play with except the fact that he smokes a lot on the course.  He has tried to get me to set up times so that we can play together, but I avoid it just because of the smoking.  I'd be much more inclined to play with someone dipping and spitting in a cup.

I dip on the course, and thing it's much better than seeing cigarette butts all over the place, especially around the greens, which pisses me off.

#1 rule though:  Don't spit on the greens, that's a big no-no.  I've been seeing a lot of people laying cigarettes and cigars on the green surface while putting lately, never really noticed it before, but that seems wrong to me as well.

I use dip. I don't smoke or drink, thats my only vice left lol. But when I dip I have a bottle, I don't spit on the greens, and make sure the random people I'm playing with don't mind. I think cigars and cigarette smoke is much worse than dipping for those who are doing neither. At least dipping isn't affecting anyone else but myself. I don't mind playing with people who smoke, to each his own, but I know some people can't stand the smoke.

I smoke cigars while playing. I always ask my playing partners if they are OK with it and bring extras in case someone else wants one. It is all about etiquette and respect. The same could be said about sunflower seeds.

I too smoke cigars on the course, not real often but almost every time I am out lately. It is one of the best black fly deterrents and they are horrible. I am not stuck in a cart with someone though and if I am, I always ask before lighting up. It is not a habit, just leisure.

I find cigarettes rather stinky and dipping is gross but to each his own. I know people feel that way about my cigars at times I am sure.

I do not want to be around anyone using tobacco products.  I do not want to smell cigarettes and cigars, and I do not want to see a spit cup (disgusting).  I get so tired of smokers imposing their nasty habit on me but it is amusing how in many cases, asking them to not smoke is considered an imposition on them.

If golf were indoors, I would have a problem with smoking, dipping, whatever.... But the cool thing about being outside is that you can walk away from smoke. No big deal. Go upwind from smoke...problem solved.

Not sure why people bitch about this. I don't smoke, but if we're outside I don't care what other people do.

I have never used a tobacco product and never will. I prefer not to be around people smoking, but as long as we are outside, I don't really care. I live in NC (tobacco road), and it seems like fewer and fewer people are using tobacco.

Because if you share a cart it's not always possible to get away from it?

I understand the cart issue, never really thought about, mostly bc I usually walk. I dont smoke cigarettes and enjoy the cigar. The cigars usually only come out when I am in a scramble with friends. But seems like people are kind of against it. I agree that spit bottles are pretty brutal and one of the reasons I switched to the spitless tobacco.

I don't want to have to deal with anything on a green spit from someone's mouth. Phlegm, cigarette or cigar butts, tobacco spit or sunflower seeds.

I used to chew 3 years ago but quit shortly before I got married (and this year received a huge insurance discount for being tobacco free!).  I always asked if I was playing with someone else if it was okay.  My regular golf buddies didn't mind and a few smoke, which doesn't bother me too much since we are outside.

Yet another reason to walk.

But yeah, cooped up in a cart is a little different.

I smoke a couple of cigarettes on the golf course, but do my best to not make the others I'm with uncomfortable.  I'm okay with slightly separating myself from the non-smokers, as opposed to them having to walk away because of the smoke.  As for the butts lying on the ground or course, totally unacceptable.  I will always wait to throw the butt in a trash can, weather on the streets or on a golf course.  Littering really bugs me.

I was a volunteer at the 99 US Open and one of the other volunteers job was to follow players and pick up their cigarette butts.  I was shocked that they would just leave them in the fairway like that--especially a guy like Daly who smoked two every hole.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
