My serious answer is (true of all gifts) that it certainly doesn't hurt to ask.  I like getting something I want/need better than getting a surprise.  Although my wife is pretty good at gifts so it's usually both.

Not this year though ... I'm getting new Ecco golf shoes!  And I'm playing (with the father in law) on Saturday too so I hope I get them a day early!

A round of golf at a course of his liking.  Usually you can go to the golf course and buy a "gift card" for a round.

Forget the equipment, I am sure he would like a "free" round of golf and a cold beer afterwards.

My father in law is getting a skycaddie sg5 (i found it for $135 with free shipping.) We are also going out to play a round that day that he is paying for since I am already in trouble for sneaking behind his back and paying the last bill.

My dad is fighting cancer (and winning, treatment went well and he is doing better), as well as a new fake knee, so he can't walk 18 anymore. So my brother, sister, and I bought him a Clubcar 4 man (front and rear facing seats)Golf Cart with a 19hp honda engine (not original, he said the other one was too noisy, but he did give us the spare engine)), and paid the storage fee's at the golf club. total price, 2250$. 2000 for the cart, tax in, 48$ licensing fees, and 190 for storage for the summer. A great deal.

It is of course, to be used by my brother and I also. My sister does not golf. But the Cart belongs to dad. It was used, and we got a great deal. Nobody has used it yet, we haven't shown it to him, but when I picked it up, it had some pep.

Best wishes to your family ApocG10. Getting my pops a real driver fitting. He's taken many lessons in his life and is a 7 handicap.but he has never had a fitting. And after I just had my first one, I am a firm believer.

If my younger brother has to work ill be taking my dad out for a round at a nice course around here. If my brother doesn't have to work I think we may spend the day at the shooting range. Dad loves shooting guns and my brother can't swing a golf club to save his life lol.

I prefer not to get golf related items as gifts.  With that said, I'll never complain if somebody gives me a dozen Pro-V1x's.  Steer clear of clubs and gadgets unless they are specifically requested.

I wish my Dad golfed.  He used to years ago but hasn't gone in  probably 15 years and he doesn't want to.  This is my first fathers day and I'd like either a gift card or a dozen balls.  No equipment unless I specifically ask for something.

My father didn't play, but he loved to watch golf in television. On Father's Day I used to visit him and watch the fourth round of the U.S. Open. We always had a great time.

I saw a cool gizmo at Barnes & Noble the other day, that I'm considering getting for my dad.  It was a golf bag with 3 "clubs" in it.  But the clubs were different colored pens, so obviously the golf bag is the size of a coffee cup and it seems to fit almost anywhere.  I mean nobody ever really needs more pens, but this is cool considering he likes to golf a lot with his spare time.

Yes, I think buying quality golf balls as a gift like Titleist Pro VI balls, is a very practical gift that will be used.

My dad's Father's Day tradition:  BBQ, eat, play cribbage, pass out in front of the TV for the rest of the afternoon -- what's on the TV?  The U.S. Open.  Every year.
