Jim F. promotes the 5 hour energy drink.  Never thought of using an enery drink but do take snacks.  Have any of you had positive results from an energy drink before or during a round?  I am old school and we frequently got a beer and hot dog at the turn but I doubt that really helped anything.

I personally don't think those things work. I remember I drank one before I went in to work when I was at US Steel. I fell asleep 2 hours into my shift sitting at a desk.

I drank one a month or two ago before an interview I had. I'm lucky I drank it when I did because when I got home I had one of the worst stomach pains/cramps I've ever had.

I mean really, all it is is a bunch of vitamins. I take a multivitamin every day, so it's probably got the same effect. Unless you're mainlining B12 I don't think the energy supplements work like they claim to.

Needless to say I'll never drink the crap again.

Before a round (since I normally tee off in the mornings), I'll usually drink a cup or two of coffee from my Keurig and from there-on-out it's nothing but a waterchuggapalooze.

I do drink the sugar free Red Bulls occasionally when I go out with friends, but they make me crash hard about 2 hours after I've had one. It's a nice wake me up, kick me downer drink.

Ill occasionally have an energy drink (full throttle blue or monster rehab) before a round - it always makes me play worse. I have one every day  while driving to work, but on the golf course - the results are never good.  I dont feel jittery but I always start out rough until the beers kick in.

I don't know if it is anything more than a superstition at this point, but lately I've been drinking a Red Bull before my round (we tee off about 7 AM) and I've been playing well.  I'm sure I'll continue to do so until things change, and then I'll find something else that gives me "good luck".

I would love to see Furyk play a round after drinking a 5HE.   I certainly doubt he does, but if so, I'll be damned.  Have you guys taken a 5HE?  They aren't a red bull.  8000+% of anything is not good.  Pretty much a diet pill in a bottle.  I've taken it twice, where I experienced very bad jitters and rapid heartbeat for the first 2 hours, and then yes, felt "energized" for a couple hours after.  I will never take one again.

As for the thread title, I normally play in the afternoon after work, so a pale ale is my preference.

Usually have a cup of coffee in the morning before heading to the course and then a bottle of water. At the turn I'll grab a Gatorade or Powerade to replace electrolytes lost during sweating and if it's hot I'll make sure I drink water throughout the round.

I take an Advocare Spark energy drink mix before the round.  Its easy on the stomach which I like because I have alot of GI issues.  Its great for those early morning rounds when you need a little pick me up.  David Toms, Rod Pampling, and Lee Janzen are a few of the players on the tour that use it.

But other than that I drink alot of water, which is extremely important.  The most important fluid you can take.  Most people are dehydrated before they even know it.  I'm an Athletic Trainer and I try to tell all the golfers I encounter the importance of staying hydrated when you out in the heat for 4+ hours.  You need to be sure that you are consuming water the day before.  The best way to check to see if you are hydrated enough is to check your urine color.  It should be clear to slight yellow, there is a urine color scale that you can use if you really want to be exact (google it).

Nothing in particular. I know every time I've had an energy drink then play golf I play TERRIBLE! I have found drinking gatorade during the round helps me.

In my Wednesday league I always get a fountain coke.  I don't know what it is but I seem to play better when I get one.  Probably a superstition but if I do not drink one I play worse.  It's only a nine hole league so water isn't an issue.

I usually play early in the morning... So I drink a Muscle Milk when I wake up... A Venti Starbucks coffee in the car and usually finish it within the first few holes.  Then water for the rest of the front 9.  And will usually get a Diet Coke at the turn... Then back to water.  I try to drink a lot of fluids throughout the round.

I agree on staying hydrated.  I have IGA Kidney disease - and I monitor my hydration exactly the way you describe... By simply checking my urine color.

Plain old water seems to work best for me.  I'll go through 6-10 bottles in a round, depending on how warm it is.  Here in Phoenix, you drink, even it you don't think you're thirsty.

I'll drink a 5 Hour Energy before a round if it's early and I closed the night before at work (I work until 2am). It seems to help a little. Normally, I just drink a lot of water and then Gatorade/Powerade on the course. My new favorite is the Lime Cucumber Gatorade (freakin' delicious) and the Sour Melon Powerade.
