Jimbo, it was great to to hear from you again.  For me, I 100% believed you.  And I admit to being the slightest bit smug sitting here in my chair. I have just a couple of questions for you relevant to the posts I made in this thread.  My premise was that hitting the long ball is not too difficult for high-level athletes who haven't played a ton of golf, epecially ones with a background in rotational mechanics (baseball, hockey, etc...).  My thoughts were based on some of my personal experiences in life having been around some pretty good athletes (and others I would consider absolute specimens) who weren't necessarily great golfers but, coincidentally, hit really long balls regularly.  Some of the guys here shot me down pretty good.  At any rate, the curiosity is killing me...

Do you consider yourself an athletic guy (outside the game of golf)?

What other sports/athletics do/did you participate in, if any?

If any, what level did you get to (rec, club, HS, HS All-star, JC, Div I/II/III college, semi-pro, pros... etc.)?

What background, if any, do you have relative to rotational mechanics?

What is/was your vertical?

Ever dunk a basketball?

Ever hit a homerun in baseball or softball?

Any other signifcant athletic achievments or feats?

And please don't mind the negative comments... golf is not the issue, the issue is the Internet.    I can count on one hand the dudes I met on the golf course I did not like.  The Internet is another story entirely.

(Mods, let me know if I am off topic, I will be glad to start a new thread...)

Yes, I have a very extensive athletic background. I didn't want to post much about and be called out for bragging. Baseball and Basketball where my main two sports. I made every all star team available to me in baseball and even played year round winter leagues. I was a medium grade home run hitter but had the highest batting average on my team most years. I played so much sports I was even in the JR Olympics track meats and swimming. It's deeper then that but no need to get into it lol.

Sincerely, Jim

Hmmm... I figured as much.  Pretty much in line with the point I was trying to make.  Good rotational mechanics and bat lag are absolutely necessary to hit both the fastball and the junk.  The lag and the shortness of a good baseball swing allow baseball players more time to look at the ball and recognize the pitch and the location.  Also, a baseball bat is a lot heavier that a golf club.  Translates to loading a lot of energy in the head and shaft of a golf club.  To hit for average, requires a lot of hand/eye coordination.  I don't know why the guys here have such a problem with the concept of that translating into a golf ball bomb.

Maybe a topic for another thread, the effect of baseball training on the long ball.  For me, the longest golf balls that I ever hit and the highest frequency of 300+ balls were when I was briefly (3 months) training for baseball/softball.  I was playing old man recreation softball and got tired of the ball hitting the fence on the bounce.  I wanted to hit a few over.  It worked, then I got lazy and stopped.  But my handicap is going down, so that's all I really care about.

You seem like a pretty decent guy.  Keep working on your game.

Jimbo, I think you are going to have to call yourself out in the spelling/grammar goofs thread again.

You know what the best kinds of meats are? Track meats!

Just poking the bear, Jimbo

I noticed jimbos errors as well. It does make it hard to read his posts. Maybe you should have been in English classes instead of playing baseball.

Jimbo is a person and his errors are possessive!

I was sending this from my phone and it was too much of a pain to add the apostrophe when I was doing it, since the name "Jimbo" doesn't show in my dictionary. If I have spelling or grammar errors it is usually due to my smart phone. I guess since I was critiquing grammar I suppose I should have taken the extra time to hit five more buttons to stick an f'n apostrophe in the comment.

I play with a lot of guys that can hit it 300. The fact some people on these websites can't believe it, says more about them than you.

Just having some fun with you!

Perhaps, but in my experience most people who think they hit it 300 really don't. That's where all the initial doubt stems from. Jimbo is simply the exception that proves the rule.

Yea I know. I am kind of a grammar Nazi... Painful to see people get through HS with horrendous grammar. BTW "Spider" is spelled with an "i"

I just picked up a new driver and for some odd reason got a stiff flex shaft. I was just looking at some charts and it seems like I would fall more into the range of an XS shaft. The lowest swing speed I might take on a drive is about 105. I know your SS isn't the only thing that would determine my shaft stiffness, but as a general rule 105-120 ss should use XS shaft? I wonder if I should take this thing back and switch it out for XS or just stick with the stiff? Ball flight is still high with lots of spin.

Sincerely, Jim

Think you need a certain amount of spin for distance but not too much, high flight is good,i would still take it back, keeping it too long then changing your mind they will obviously not change it

I am starting to sound like a broken record but GET FITTED. I thought I needed a XS shaft before I was fitted myself. I ended up with the project x shaft 7C3. It is on the borderline of XS and brought my ball flight down considerably. I love the new shaft.

I have the 105 ss so stiff was the obvious answer for me but if youre on the verge you should probably get fitted. If you were to not get fitted I would lean towards stiffer rather than softer.

    • Matt, the equation is simple from my perspective. Stronger the grip, greater the potential of application for twist torque at impact. And if it it is combined with an extreme outward path as you say, god help you. Not too many skilled players with super strong grips, are there? Sure, it's all about match-ups but the connection to super strong grips and duck hooks is common from what I see and have dealt with myself.
    • Day 154: not feeling great, so just 5 minutes of mirror work. Working on backswing stuff still.
    • I have been a big follower of this technology ever since I saw Positive Putters display at a golf show in the Revealer they invented and patented. That would have been around 2000. It made sense to me that staying target line balanced was a better way of balancing.  Early models of these putters were often too flat for me and I struggled to hole more putts. I was fascinated by all of them - Positive Putters, the Railgun, the SeeMore blades and the Backstryke. I have tried the DF1, which was great for long putts, and currently use the DF3. I am still really good at long putts with the DF3 3, having made a 90’ putt and a 34’ putt in my last two rounds. My first round with the DF3 I only had 24 putts making almost 200’ of putts. I don’t quite use the putter the way they suggest- I don’t swing harder, and only a little longer, on longer putts. All my putts are at the same tempo, or strive to be. Therefore, I am swinging harder on longer putts. I do love putting with the DF 3 and I have become much better at putting through 50-60 mm gates at home, rarely hitting the sides.
