  1. 1. Thoughts on Johnny Miller (as an announcer)

    • Johnny's one of the best announcers in the game

    • Ehh... he's OK

    • I hope Johnny and his nasally voice go away... forever

I don't remember who was hitting during Saturdays round at the Honda Classic, but right after the swing Miller came in with, "Sounded a half groove low.." referring to the contact the player had just made.

I mean, maybe I'm wrong, I honestly don't know how in-tune with the sights/sounds of pure golf shots (ex)tour players are, so feel free to correct me. But.... really? It sounded a half groove low?

I mean I knew Johnny Miller was the greatest golfer of all time; never missed a putt inside 25' in his career...etc. All that is plainly evident if you listen to a few telecasts where he's on the mic. But now come to find out he has the auricular resolution (got that?) to detect a golf ball struck .070" too low on a club face. Wow.

That was some of his finest work to date.

Is it me, or does Johnny Miller get a little too excited when analizing* players physiques. Now that Tigers MIA, I see that he's found a new intrest in Camilo's "thrusting torque filled thighs". Im not trying to pick on Miller, but it's just too easy. And on that matter, dont you think there is about 100 better golf announcers out there?

I watched both days of the broadcast and never got the impression he was excited about any player's physique.

I'm kind of curious as to how you took golf commentary and turned it into homosexual ertoticism. But then, you did misspell analyzing by "analizing". A Freudian slip of the keystroke? I'm not trying to pick on you, but your post raised some blips on my radar.

Whoever came up with the saying, "A bad day of golf is better than a good day at work", is a moron.

Miler dosent bother me that much, he is just a golf announcer. But if we want to criticize some serious ballwashing wait until Jim Nantz shows up at augusta. He always seems to get away with that sycophanitc style commentary when he does the masters.

I heard him make that comment and in context I just took it as sarcasim...the guy topped the ball and miller was either being diplomatic or sarcastic. your call.

The strangest thing I heard Miller say this weekend was regarding international players. Sidekick mentioned how prevalent the international players had become and Johnny says "Just once I would like to hear them thank the United States for making them rich and famous". Woof, pretty strong! How about we would like to thank them for bringing some personality to the PGA. About 90 seconds later he said something about how great it was to have international players, I can just imagine what was screamed in his ear!

I'm taking a break from watching the U.S. Open to vent about how awful Johnny Miller's commentary is. I'm tempted to watch the rest of the final round on mute. Miller has no personality and compensates by being hyper-critical and grouchy. He makes watching golf nearly unbearable. From the way he talks, you'd think he never made a mistake on the golf course for his entire career.

Miller is alright. He usually knows his stuff, though occasionally is completely wrong. I do like Feherty. McCord is a complete jack ass!

I'm not sure if we watched the same tourney. I really don't care which way you swing your club, that dosnt bother me a bit,... but when watching golf, I would like to enjoy just that; Golf Coverage, not 15 ultra slowmo shots of Camilo and hearing Hicks and Miller swoon over his "phisique". Dont get me wrong, I enjoy the slowmo shot of a pured drive, but that got just a little out of hand

Again with the homosexual insinuations!? I'm curious as to why you feel the need to project homosexual tendencies on others. In my post, I never gave the impression I was gay, so why are you insinuating?

In my original post, I just thought it was odd you were seeing erotica where I was seeing a swing analysis.

Whoever came up with the saying, "A bad day of golf is better than a good day at work", is a moron.

Agreed. But Nantz must have it written in his contract or something, to be sycophantic I mean - he's so predictable and consistent about it. Actually I don't mind in his case, he's conscientious and knowledgeable enough about many sports and seems a decent fellow - I've seen worse.

As for Miller, OK so he's a bit idiosyncratic at times but the guy knows his goff ..... Like Sir Nick, he has a wealth of insights about what's happening out there for the edification of lesser mortals like us. I cut people like that a break.

I used to like Johnny Miller, but it seems he's lost his edge. There were to many commentators on yesterday's WGC broadcast for him to do his stuff. Or maybe he's just mellowing with age. Anymore he's not saying much that I can't see for myself.

Someone brought up Jim Nantz. This guy is a caricature of himself. Every comment he makes, and I mean every comment, has that this-is-for-the-ages, a-moment-in-history-that-will-change-our-lives-forever tone that has just gone way too far. He should retire to the Champions Tour with his roomie.
