I have a tendency to have very fast hips which has been causing me to slice or hit the ball to the right because i get ahead of my club and this leaves the face open.  I have been looking at the swings of professional golfers and Rory McIlroy has very fast hips as well, but he hits it straight.

Does anybody have any tips on how to:

1. Turn my hands over faster like Rory

or

2. Slow down my lower body

Please do some reading.

Your clubface is probably not wide open. It's probably pretty square to the target, maybe even pointing left of it at impact.

Also, please don't try to "turn your hands over faster."

Others will likely join in and help you but here are two threads worth reading:

Now I've seen it all.

A golfer with a bad slice somehow tries to claim that he has something in common with Rory McIlroy. Amazing.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

When you say slice, is your ball starting off going towards the target and then slicing off to the right or is your ball starting off going to the right of the target and then slicing even further to the right?

Do you often have a ball flight that is straight, has no slice, but is pushed to the right?

Well, maybe he has a hot Danish girlfriend and tends not to last the weekend. You never know. Or millions of dollars (which would make the former more likely).

To the OP: It seems the fast hips you refer to are something you consciously try to do as opposed to a natural thing. Fast hips are great but you don't hit the ball with your hips. If you have proper timing and sequencing it trumps hip speed every time. For the one thing you try to have in common with Rory, your swing probably has a dozen parts that are different. Copy everything else about his swing before you try to copy the one part that's pure talent, that almost no one else does. Start with his setup fundamentals and rock solid impact position.

I used to try to spin my hips and take a huge backswing at least 20˚ past parallel with like 60˚ of hip turn, even with my irons. Right now I'm barely getting to parallel with my driver and none of my irons get much past 45˚ in the backswing. If I took video of my swing, my hips are probably pretty fast but it's totally unconscious. All I do is straighten my right leg at the prime moment and my hips miraculously clear.

Rory has said his key thought for hitting driver is just hitting it hard. He isn't superhuman as far as his hands, no pro golfer can get himself out of crappy positions with his hands. Maybe Furyk. If you're slicing it's your grip, swing path, or hitting off the heel. All of which are correctable at setup.

It goes to the right of the the target and usually turns off even more to the right as it reaches the peak.

Well sir, if that is what you are, every male has "something" in common with Rory, if you know what I mean. He isn't a God, so commonalities aren't rare. Also, fast hips aren't a rarity either, so it wouldn't be hard to say I have fast hips like Rory.

Thank you for the readings. I have a book somewhere at home that has a lot of information that is in the first article, but now I have the information.

i'm probably oversimplifying things, but a lot of the times when i slice a fairway metal/driver, it's because i catch it far out on the toe - not bc my club face is open, or my action with the lower 1/2 is out of sync.

Underplane and path out to the right with the face more to the right. Push slice all day...  MVMAC gave you some help with the shoulders being to flat also.  The reason you are hitting the shot you hate though is the bolded first part.

Definitely go with what others said, steepen your shoulder angle. You are so flat that it would be very hard not to come form the inside too much.

Video of your swing would help out the discussion.

Otherwise, if you really fire your hips like Rory, they better have a reverse component to them as well! :)

    • I agree with @dennyjones, a suspension of some meaningful duration would be better than getting bounced from the Tour. They might consider experimenting each week. It might generate a bit of interest. I like the idea of a visible shot clock. If a player and their caddy can’t decide on a strategy and pull the trigger in XX seconds (30? 45? 60?), one stroke penalty. Give each player 2 resets a round. The clock starts when the last player to hit’s ball stops moving. Other pace ideas could be used every couple events until a consensus is reached to adopt or ditch an idea.
