Was watching Ryder Cup from '97, Valderama, on TV and saw Seve walk up to one of his men and offer a comment apparently on how to play the next shot.  Heretofore i thought it was 'you and your caddy' and no one else. Must be in these team events a new set of Rules kick in.

A quick google of "rules of golf advice captain" turns up this link:

No new rules, just a condition of competition.

In a team match the committee may appoint one person (possibly a coach or the team captain) who is allowed to give advice to his players.  They also have the right to not allow such assistance.  I believe that in the Ryder Cup it is allowed.

In the Ryder Cup the captain may give advice, but not the assistants.  This  came up on one of the recent Ryder cups when it was thought that Jose Maria Olazabal (an assistant then) may have said something to a player that he shouldn't have.  Turned out he hadn't.

I believe they call the conditions of competition document "Captains Choice" at the Ryder.

John

Don't they allow the captain to delegate the advice-giving ability to one of his assistants.  But then, of course, the captain wouldn't be able to give advice?

Or maybe I'm thinking of the President's Cup?

Or maybe I'm just dreaming something up?  LOL

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Whoever is appointed has to be approved by the committee and is only allowed to act as the committee instructs.

This is the note to Rule 8:

Note: The Committee may, in the conditions of a team competition (Rule 33-1), permit each team to appoint one person who may give advice (including pointing out a line for putting) to members of that team. The Committee may establish conditions relating to the appointment and permitted conduct of that person, who must be identified to the Committee before giving advice.

Did play it last year for the first time and it is awesome.

    • I think you're saying it's preposterous to think that the areas on this club are anything like what's shown here: 30mm toward the toe or heel loses only 5% distance? Highly, highly doubtful. So a guy who hits the ball there and normally hits the ball about 250… will hit it instead about 238. By missing the sweet spot by about 1.2 inches? Highly, highly doubtful. Heck, the high heel barely gets into the red, and orange is only "up to" 10%! @M2R, I've never heard of "Ask Golf Nut" but I'm dubious of his claims in the video and really, really dubious of what's on his site: "Why AskGolfNut Is the Most Trusted Data-Driven Golf Resource". Hmmmmmm.
