Back in May, I decided that I wanted to get fitted finally. So I go to the local range and get fitted by my PGA pro who I took a few lessons from 10 or so years ago, who also happens to be a fitter for PING.

He takes all of my measurements, has me hit 30 or 40 balls with a 7 iron on the monitor, then hands me a Ping i20 with the adjustment he thinks I need. All of a sudden my fade turns into a straight shot, sometimes baby draw and the club feels really nice. He also comes around and mentions that when I swing harder, I'm really coming over the top. Then he kneels down and holds a foam tube thing in front of me (facing me while at address) and says dont hit this on your downswing. Seems like a cool drill to keep me from coming over the top and it WORKED. So he determined based on the analysis of my swing and static measurements that I should be getting the Blue dot (0.75 degrees upright). He orders them, I pay my $700 and change and pick them up a week later.

Everything's great for 2 months, but I'm still concentrating on the drill we did during the fitting because I'm always trying to make my swing as good as possible. Trying to make sure I am swinging on an inside-out path and everything's looking good. I even picked up a club in distance. Cool right?

Then it happened.... The baby draw has turned into a BIG hook....uh-oh. This has been going on for almost a month now. So as I'm reading online, desperately trying to figure out what is going on, I'm seeing that an upright lie can actually encourage a hook. UGH...so my swing has gotten better, but I just wasted 700 on a lie angle based on my original faulty swing?

Here's the question, should I ask to have the lie adjusted back to standard by them based on this or ask for a re-fitting or what?

My scores have jumped from high seventies/low eighties to low to high 90s all because of this hook that is out of control and the adjustments i am now trying to make. Every round is a grinding 4 hours of damage control...   Hit me with suggestions... I'm all ears.  Thanks!

Snap hooks are my nemesis the last few years. I find a lot of my hooks seem to come when I hit the ball towards the toe of the club. Nearer the sweet spot I get more manageable draws or a straight flight (occasionally still a fade). A bit of duct tape on the club face at a practice range should help you determine if that is part of the problem.

Good luck.

I would get with that pro, a pro, and get his opinion of your swing before adjusting teh clubs. You were fine for two months, your swing changed the clubs did not

I had something similar happen to me for a while.  What helped me out was working on a 3 ball drill and moving the ball forward in my stance a little.  I know it sounds opposite, like moving the ball forward would increase a hook, because your club is already rotated over, but what I think it does it it kind of makes you force your wrists not to break too soon.  Oh, if you google "golf 3 ball drill" you'll see what I mean if you're not sure - if you golfed long enough to shoot in the 70s you probably do though.

Your lie angle should fit your posture and make the club lay flat at impact. Don't use it as a flight adjustment except maybe on a driver; you'll compromise clean contact or force yourself out of position to adjust. It's an absolutely terrible fitting parameter to use for correcting direction because it has only a small effect on direction but a large one on crisp contact. You can adjust your aim to correct a hook, but a consistently chunky contact will drive the strongest men to madness. And that's what you'll get if you bend your lies too far off your ideal.

You're hooking because you changed your swing. Either find a way to change it back, check your setup and fundamentals, or get new shafts and start at square 1. And .75˚ isn't going to do anything. That will have maybe a 2 yard effect on your direction at 150 yards. Go back to the fitter since he should know your swing, have him take a look.

.75 degrees isn't going to change anything much.  Your lie isn't the problem the swing is.

Agree -

Put lie or masking tap across the bottom of your sole and hit your club off a lie board. What do you see?

Simple left fixes - keep your hips turning on the downswing (you stop, you flip); check your grip to ensure it is not too strong; get on your front foot.

There  are a lot more fixes. Fix.

I once blamed everything on my clubs.

For me, when I fail to do this properly, I tend to hook my shots.

Perhaps you overdid the drill. A snap hook is indicative of either a very closed clubface, or a very inside to out swing path. Get your swing on video to see which of the two it is, and then you'll know which of them you need to work on. Perhaps instead of just putting on foam tube to swing under in your downswing, you could make a "gate" for the club to pass through so you can work on not coming too far from the inside as well.

Ummm, if you have an in to out path with an open club face, you still get a ball flight to the right.

And I should know - was on a monitor last year and saw it in all its glory.
