Yesterday, we played the first TST outing here in Socal at Mile Square golf course in Fountain Valley.  We had 10 guys, and it was a lot of fun.  Hopefully we can replicate this type of outing in the future, and many of us felt it was something we could do on a quarterly basis.

So in this thread, lets discuss geography, course(s), date and time we want to have the next outing at.  This can be up for open discussion and we can weigh the pros and cons about each.  The goal is to get more guys to join us.  So please direct users to this group discussion that are in the Socal area.  Or better yet, if you have friends or family in the Socal market who likes to play golf, let them know about TheSandTrap and have them join us on the forum.  Hopefully they will start using this forum as well.

A few things to consider based on discussions we had yesterday after our outing at Mile Square....

1.) Tristan lives in Palm Springs/Desert area and there are boat loads of courses we could play in the area.  Ideas were being kicked around about making a road trip that way and playing a round (or two) during the Spring, before it gets too hot in the desert.

2.) MvMac lives in San Diego - and we talked about playing there - possibly at Torrey Pines.  This is another solid option, my concern would be the cost of the round... As I know many of us are on golf 'budgets'.  But with the round being many weeks/months out - perhaps we could plan accordingly?  Torrey Pines is definitely on my 'bucket list'... And I want to play it.  So I'd definitely be interested playing Torrey.  But my thought is that maybe we should play in San Diego in the Summer (2nd quarter of 2013) as the weather will be a little nicer/warmer?

So I'll stop rambling now... What do you guys think?  Let's get some ideas flowing so that we can put together another fun outing.  Note, for those that attended yesterdays event... Also please comment on things you would like to see continued (things you enjoyed/liked) about the outing at Mile Square, and things you would like to see modified (disliked).  We want everyone to enjoy this so that this type of event can grow and become more exciting as time moves on.

On a side note, I'm headed to Terra Lago in a few to hit balls and I'll inquire about pricing for us for sometime down the road. I think it'd be a good course for all of us to play... right of the freeway, easy to get too and all of that. Real good layout as well.

Here's the site for those who may be interested in this:

I think were looking at the spring for this, right guys?

Yeah, my vote is for Palm Springs/Desert this Spring as it would be nice weather and not have to play in the gruesome heat.  Let us know what you find about the rates and we can bounce them off the guys here.

I believe that everyone had a good time and is interested in making it a recurring thing.  Quarterly sounds good to me.  I like the Palm Springs in the spring and San Diego in the summer idea.  One other option that we could kick around ...

If there are not enough members in the San Diego area or Palm Springs area to counteract the LA area folks who may not be able to make a long drive or road trip, we could consider something like Temecula as well.  I have never golfed there, but I believe they have quite a few nice courses.  Also - pretty proud of myself here too for guessing the "correct" midpoint - I just mapped it out and the drive from Newport Beach, San Diego, and Palm Springs, to Temecula are all within about 5 minutes of each other at around 1 hr 15 min.

Anyways, regardless, it'll be fun to plan another, hopefully continue to grow the tournament through the site, and also grow the site through the tournament if we can get more people to join.

[Beach: you should have told Andrew and Mike that they are required to join TST to collect their prizes!]

I'm done rambling too!

Ha!  Good point!! Let's make this a requirement for future tournaments/outings.  I'll send out notes to Andrew and Mike to ask them to join the site.

Temecula is a good area for golf.  The course I've played several times is Temecula Creek Inn which has 27 holes.  All decent.  The prices there on the weekend are $70 or $75ish.

Temecula does have some good courses and they seem to be pretty reasonable all year long so that could be a good option.

I'm just thowring it out there as a secondary option but I still think the Palm Springs plan should be our first consideration.

I agree.  Personally, I love Palm Springs for golf.

So I checked in with the guys at Terra Lago today and it'd be about $80-$100 per player right now depending on day/time and which course (the North course is more expensive, but honestly I think the South course is just as good). Those are the rates until April when they'll have a price drop.

Why don't we shoot for the beginning of April... the weather is still good, the days will be getting longer, and it'll be cheaper. I know it may be hard to get everybody out this direction considering it's 2+ hours for many of the members so I want to try to keep the price down as much as possible.

I will look at other courses as well, but from my experience, Terra Lago seems like the best blend of affordability and a nice desert layout.

Oak Valley in Beaumont may also be a great option... even now, their rates are $55 weekdays/$69 weekends. It's an awesome course and just a bit closer for most of the guys (just under an hour from the desert). Just throwing it out there... we have a lot of time to get this one figured out so let's come up with some different ideas and I can put this one together considering it looks like this one will be in my neck of the woods.

This sounds good to me.  According to Mapquest, its a 2 hour drive on the nose for me.  With the ample amount of planning time, I would look into making it a weekend with the wife and leave the kids with grandma and grandpa.  And if any others were considering staying overnight, either a late afternoon Saturday round (daylight savings time will have already started) or an early morning Sunday round seems like it would be ideal.

P.S.  Just noticed on their website that they held the Skins Game there for a few years (1999-2001).  Cool!

Guys, you're not thinking big enough.

Make Mike call ahead, tell the course you have 16 guys playing, and that you're coming as part of a Sand Trap outing and you'd like to work out a deal. You can all review the course, take and post pictures, link to the course's website, whatever.

Paying retail? C'mon. :) Think... ;)

Rooster in the hen house!!!

Joining just to post this. I am respectfully requesting that one of you guys use one of those cameras you use to film your swings to at least shoot some opening tee shots or something for us to watch. And maybe the green on the final hole?

That is all ... carry on.

    • ..maybe 1 shot HC change might be a good starting point..
    • Yeah, I have a similar view. I was in the team of 2 and we got down 5 after 5. Get 1 pt if win the hole - whatever that game is called. We lost it 3 down with 2 to play so almost saved it. After the first hole when the single did a putt, then dropped a second ball, made a slight adjustment and sunk it, we thought it wasn't right. We couldn't do anything with handicaps etc so we just made them wait between putts - usually just one of us to putt. We were a 23 and 25 handicappers (probably playing to about 28) and the single was a 16 handicapper, but somehow had a HC of 20 (so that is 1 HC pt already). In terms of making it fair, and changing HC (HC1 + HC2 / 4), I think maybe adding 2 HCs to the double (or taking 2 HC off the single (after the adding and div by 4) might make it fair. Also maybe making a rule that the single couldn't change clubs for the second hit. Hard to say from that one game but possibly: - 2 shot HC adding - can't change clubs for second shot - need to have other team putt in between their 2 putts   Not sure. Do you think you'd still win or have these rules made it unfair the other way? Cheers for thoughts..
    • In that case I double down on my comments - I'll take the single guy and I know if I'm in that match against two similar players I'm pretty confident that I'm the favorite.
