Congrats, great playing

Thanks man. Didn't do so hot today. +7 43 on nine holes, with a triple and a double. Gotta stay away from those big numbers.

Positive: I've been scoring well. Negative: Struggling a bit with coming across the line. Haven't quite found a feel that I like. Does anyone have a drill to help fix the backswing? Would be greatly appreciated.

I would first make sure the club isn't getting too far inside the hands at A2, can usually lead to routing the club across the line at 4.

Is this A2? I'm not quite familiar with the system so this is my best approximation. What it feels like to me is that I stand the club up fine on the way back and just can't stop myself from going across the line.

Yes A2 is shaft parallel to the ground on the backswing. You can check out the "Golf Terminology" link in my signature.

Club gets across the line because the shaft gets too narrow on the backswing. You're going to feel "wider" at the top of the backswing, not the arms but the distance between the shaft and the right shoulder. Basically from A3 (left pic) to A4 (right pic) you're going to feel like the distance (green arrows) stays the same.

So it can look like this

Instead of like this, note the difference in "space" between the shaft and right shoulder.

Right picture is how it's going to feel

Shot 76 today, and the best part is that I played like shit. Lot of fun, though.

I've been working on adding distance between the shaft and my right shoulder, making it wider so it doesn't collapse. One of the feels that helped me a bunch is to squeeze the elbows together. More width at the top, but I still need to work on extending out further.

It is good to have fun.  Makes the misses less painful.

Yeah man it was a good time. Played with a buddy of mine that I've known since I was eight years old, so it was super fun

Quick question: trying to increase shoulder turn. Is a good feel for that to feel as if my right side is stretching? I'm trying to shorten my arm swing and increase my shoulder turn

Yep that feeling can work as well as this one

This helped immensely. I hit the driver eight times today, and six of the eight times the ball went 300+ and my last drive went 349. Gotta work on the wedges now.

So, Frank and I got together Monday morning. I'm doing everything pretty well; as Frank said, my pivot is 'money' (which I took great pride in hearing) but the backswing is still too narrow.

He had me keep my hands pressed together (pressure point #1 in TGM terms, though he didn't explain it to me that way). It helped immensely. Left arm stays straighter, right arms stays more in front and folds only a tiny bit past 90 degrees, if at all.

The only frustrating thing about is that Frank told me six months ago to feel as though my hands stayed pressed together and I just flat-out refused to do it because it felt horrible. Further proof than I am the dumbest dumbass on the planet.

Swing feels better than it ever has. Needs some work, still, because while I can do it in the mirror I still have a tendency to revert back under pressure. At about 70% speed is the limit for me hitting my backswing marks at the moment, though it gets better every day.

Just gotta keep working.

Been a while since I updated. I've played only a few times and practiced even less; college has hoovered up all of my time and energy.

But I've been able to do some mirror work, and when I do play the results are promising. I am still getting across the line, but less and less. Now that I've found the right feel to stop going across the line, it's just a matter of ingraining it.

Hope to have some video by this upcoming week.

I played for the first time in a couple months today. Shot a +8 44, which considering the layoff I'm not displeased with. Truth be told, I left at least five strokes out on the course from duffed chips.

It was weird how bad my short game was. I putted good and I hit one bad shot the whole day. The driver, my absolute nemesis before I had this long lay off, was spot on today. Three drives over three hundred. Honestly though, I'd be happy if I shot +40; it felt so damn good just to swing the club again.

While I didn't play, I've been doing pretty steady mirror work. I've increased my shoulder turn from less than 90 on average to at least a hundred or so. My left arm is much straighter at the top, though that still isn't where it needs to be. I've been in the gym a good bit over the last month and a half, and it shows; I feel so much more powerful, more stable, when I swing.

I missed golf much more than I realized. But I did well at college, setting me up for a good final semester of my senior year. My father and I (who had knee surgery five weeks ago yesterday) is playing with me. We played today, too.

Hope y'all had a good holiday season, and an even better New Years. Happy 2015, everybody.

So, this is the first time I've personally taken video of my swing since July of last year. About a week after that until mid-November, I had my best stretch of golf ever. I shot in the seventies probably eight or nine times, and had a lot of success in our club's dogfight. My dad had knee surgery in November, and I was in my first semester of my last year of college, and so I just stopped playing. Like, nothing. I may have went to the range a few times, but that was it. I didn't play until New Years, and really only played on the weekends with no practice until early May, when I graduated from college.

It's taken me about a month to finally get some consistency, but I'm playing fairly well; shooting in the mid to low eighties. My short game has been phenomenal for the last month.

This video above was supposed to be one of three but my camera died about thirty seconds after I filmed this. So, this is what I got. In this video, I'm working on keeping my hips deep on both the back swing and down swing, to help reduce my early extension problem I've been having, as well as getting the club pointed more left at the top. I do that well, until the last swing, when it creeps back in, but it's getting better.

Also, I know this camera setup is too far to the left. I didn't realize it until I took the video and by the time I figured it out it was too late. I really wanted to get some video up, so I'm posting it anyways.

Bit too far to the right, actually.

But small point there, and the bigger context is… glad to hear you're back at it, and your swing is looking pretty nice. Looking forward to some slow-mo video if you can make it, and some video where you're just hitting a shot without working so hard on something. It can help you confirm, as you would know, whether that's still the priority piece.

    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
    • I don't think you can snag lpga.golf without the actual LPGA having a reasonable claim to it. You can find a ton of articles of things like this, but basically: 5 Domain Name Battles of the Early Web At the dawn of the world wide web, early adopters were scooping up domain names like crazy. Which led to quite a few battles over everything from MTV.com You could buy it, though, and hope the LPGA will give you a thousand bucks for it, or tickets to an event, or something like that. It'd certainly be cheaper than suing you to get it back, even though they'd likely win. As for whether women and golfers can learn that ".golf" is a valid domain, I think that's up to you knowing your audience. My daughter has natalie.golf and I have erik.golf.
