He would be Number 1 right now, if it weren't for the arbitrary 40 event minimum that is used for OWGR.

OWGR:

Rory - 47 events  - 538.97 points - average 11.47 avg

Tiger - 36 events - 419.04 points - 11.64 avg (but using 40 event minimum) 10.48

Players play, tough players win!

I watched every shot Tiger hit on Sunday at Doral and he hit plenty of draws when he felt the need too. On the range he hit mostly pull fades but included several draws, and during the course of the round he hit several draws. Granted, they were about 3 to 4 yard push draws, small but still draws.

That does not answer my question. There must be a some form of calculating the results. Please elaborate if you know what it is.

I think he'll be back to #1 somewhere between Augusta and the US Open.  I also don't buy the "he can't hit a draw" so he wont win at Augusta argument.  He will hit 3 woods on 13 and 15 and that's about all he needs to do.  I don't think he'll win The Masters though, I think Phil probably will.

Ok, I was just looking over the OWGR... And was curious where Tigers totals were in a historical perspective...  The numbers only go back to 2003, but still gives us some interesting perspectives on where Tiger is in 2013, compared to the Tiger of old.

In September 2007, Tiger had an astounding 24.3558 point average.  What does that mean?  In comparison Rory is currently at #1 with an 11.47 point average and Tiger sits at 10.48.

24.3558 average over ~ 40 events would be a 974.232 point total for Tiger...  Tiger currently has a 419.04 point total using today's OWGR.  Looking at the two, his current versus his peak, that's a 555.192 differential... So h ow many wins would Tiger need to eclipse the pinnacle he reached in 2007?

Lets see... Tiger would need to win another 11 tournaments like Torey Pines (50 pts)... Or win another eight WGC or FedEx playoffs (74pts)... Or six majors (100pts) over the next two years - or some combination of them!!

That shows how good Tiger was... To say he is 'back'... I think he is getting there.  But he isn't close to where he once was.

Want to be really astounded? The numbers do go back farther than 2003, it's just the downloadable player-by-player .csv files that end then. If you go to a general leaderboard, you can look at the rankings week-by-week. I only poked around very briefly, but the highest I ever found Tiger was the week of June 3rd, 2001. Tiger had 32.44 points! http://dps.endavadigital.net/owgr/doc/content/archive/2001/owgr22f.pdf

How freaking sick is that... So for those wondering or too lazy to do the math...

32.44 average.... 1,297.6 point total (over 40 events)

He would need to win 25 tournaments like Torrey (50 pts).... Or 18 WGC/FedEx Playoff events (74 pts).... Or 13 majors over the course of two years.

The differential from where he is as of 3-14-2012 to where he would need to be to reach that 6-3-2001 mark is.... 878.56. So that equates to another 18 tournament wins, 9 WGC / FedEx Playoff wins... Or 9 majors... Or some mix of the three. Pretty much needs to have at least 9 wins a season over the course of two years to reach his pinnacle.

What I'm pissed about is that during that amazing run.... 2000 to 2001.  I had my head up my ass (many would argue I still do), and didn't really follow golf.  So while I would see Tiger on Sports Center... I didn't really watch any of those tournaments where he was on the prowl and crushing the field.

Yeah, I see his point total was higher - but he played in 45 tournaments.  Right now he isn't even meeting the minimum requirement (40 tournaments).  So that is why I used that number...

Am I wrong or do I sense a serious lack of respect for what Donald and Rory have been able to do in the past few years? If I recall correctly Tiger retained his number one status long after his meltdown. I recall for a couple of months where Tiger was clearly not the best golfer in the world but because of his tremendous run for a couple years he was able to keep his status. Maybe I just see things through "lefty colored glasses" but I I think its pretty clear that Donald has been the most consistent golfer in the world for a couple of years now. That being said I do think that Tiger may be the best in the world right now...even if I don't particularly care for him.

Are we talking about the most consistent golfer, or the best golfer over the last two years (in relation to field)?  Because if we are talking about the best... Rory would be that man.  And Tiger would be behind him - see the rankings.

Now if we are talking about the most consistent... I dunno.

But, Donald hasn't won a tournament since last May...

Tiger retained the #1 ranking until early November (or very late October) 2010, so a tad under a year after the car crash. So, OWGR-wise, from November 2008 to November 2010 were being used. He didn't play from Nov 2008 to Feb 2009 with the post-U.S. Open win knee surgery. He won 6 times in 2009 total. Then he took off from Nov 2009 to April 2010 with the scandal stuff, had a neck injury that kept him out a month after the Players in May, and took off more time than usual in Oct/Nov 2010 after missing out on the Tour Championship. Lee Westwood was the one who originally took over the top ranking, then Martin Kaymer for a bit in early 2011, then Luke Donald, then Rory, back to Luke, and then Rory. I'm not exactly sure what point I'm trying to make, so...

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
