According to TMZ, Phelps beat Jordon by 1 stroke, shooting a 72!

I don't get the Golf Channel, but for those of you that do, has he improved that much on the Haney Project?

I've watched the show enough to know there's no way Phelps shot a 72 gross. It must have been a handicapped tournament, and they are reporting net scores.

(Btw, it's spelled "Jord a n".)

Edit: I just looked it up - it was a 36 hole, two-man team scramble tournament, which explains the low scores. Phelps got a lot of help from his partner Mario Lemieux, I'm sure.  The report going around has the wrong scores anyway - actual results are:

Dwight Freeney / Michael Jordan: 71-73

Michael Phelps / Mario Lemieux:  72-73

Ah, you are probably correct.

Did anyone happen to see it and what his gross score was?

See my edit above - there were no gross scores because it was a scramble.

Sounds like it would be a fun event to watch, but of course a scramble isn't really golf so the scores are meaningless.

Thanks! Sorry for typo on Jordan's name, but as you can see on the title I had it correct there ;)

No worries, just thought you'd want to know.

Yeah, apparently TMZ looked at the results page and thought that the scores for each of the rounds represented the scores for each individual on the team. Then a bunch of other sites picked up on the story and are similarly reporting on the so-called Phelps "victory". Good job, internet!

Some pretty scary scores for a scramble. Had to lol at the +19, brutal.

Funny, I think the same thing when I see the winning scores for any scramble.

(While the players in this one probably had more scrutiny than most, I bet there were still a lot of 8-foot gimmes among the celebs.)

My wife comes in the living room today to tell me that Phelps played Jordan at Shadow Creek, LV and beat him 72 to 73. I confidently explained there is NO possible way that happened. She tells me it's reported on TMZ. I laugh. His career best before Haney was 91 or something. I knew he could not shoot 72 unless it was handicapped. Then she realized it was a scramble.

Mario plays at around scratch, and Jordan is 3'ish HC.   If all they could muster was around even par, you know Phelps and Freeney didn't do much to help.......LOL

those are terrible scores....

And sorry to keep jumping in, but I think it's important to emphasize:  Phelps did not beat Jordan in any way, scramble or otherwise. Phelps' team shot one worse than Jordan's, TMZ interpreted the results incorrectly on that level as well.

Yeah, I understand. I saw the results posted here. As stated, it looks like Jordan and Freeny beat Phelps and Lameiux by 1 stroke in a 36 hole event. It also looks as if Phelps didn't contribute too much as Super Mario is a scratch golfer. This story is exactly why I was laughing when my wife told me Phelps shot 72 and best Jordan.

    • Option one. Would like an ace even if it’s a worm burner. Have witnessed a couple of aces so would like to be on the other end.
    • OK - I think we should narrow down a weekend, and start there.  We're going to try to do this in June. I've created a Doodle poll where everyone can vote for the options that work for them.  Please include your username so I can track/post results. Doodle Doodle is the simplest way to schedule meetings with clients, colleagues, or friends. Find the best time for one-to-ones and team meetings with our user-friendly calendar tool. Get started today! (I only put in the Saturday dates, but assume the outing would include Friday - Sunday). Once we select a date that works for the most people, I'll start to line up courses and schedule and go from there.
    • Option #2 because I'd add the condition that it's in a tournament. Because that'd mean I'd break par in a tournament. And I already have a hole in one.
    • Hole in one is nice, but those low rounds stick in my memory better. I have two holes in one (and a third on a pitch and putt course which I count as a half). I've shot in the 60s three times in the last 10 years or so and I remember each one pretty well. I'd take the low round.
    • Would You Rather #68: Would you rather make a hole-in-one on a perfectly struck shot, during a round where you otherwise played pretty poorly.  or  Would you rather play well all day and beat your personal best by let's say 3 strokes, but with no eagles.    I'd take option 2.   Although option 1 is always exciting, and rewarding. playing well all day is very exciting because I can also do the opposite.
