US Open question?

Why does the Open call it a "National" championship when it has foreign players? Shouldn't it just be a World championship?

It is the Championship for the US.  A foreigner can will, but it is still the US Championship.

Virtually every country has a national championship in virtually every sport. They are almost always open to competitors from overseas.

This might make one reflect on grandiose titles like the "World Series" in baseball - which should be called the North American Baseball Championship.

I'm not a fan of the self-righteous proclaiming themselves "world champions" (Yes, NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL, I'm looking at you and your respective championships) especially when you're lucky to play a team from Canada and that's the extent of the "world" flavor.

It's a joke.  A sad joke.

But applying that same reasoning, I guess a more contentious question is why "The Open Championship" should not be formally renamed "The British Open" especially as most folks outside of the U.K. already call it that.

Tradition, mainly. Being the oldest of the majors, when it started in 1860, golf was only being played in Scotland/Britain. So back then it was, essentially, The Open Championship.

So don't expect the R&A; to change it to a title which basically shrinks its significance.

This is the original title of the Series when it was first promoted, which is why it is still called the "World Series".  And because baseball is a world sport, and all the world's best players are in Major League Baseball where the big money is, it still is a championship of the best teams in the world.

Because it's actually called the "Open Championship".  The one being played this week is actually called the "US Open".  When you win the Open Championship, you're the "champion golfer" for the year.  I think that's the coolest thing about the Open Championship is being the "champion golfer".  That's something I'd love to slap on a resume.

The even bigger joke are the "World Golf Championship" events - they should be called invitationals, as they are very limited field, no cut events; which have been played, almost, exclusively in the USA. If they wanted to portray those more accurately it should be the "Rich getting Richer Invitationals" - but that isn't going to happen.

The WGC was established by the PGA Tour because Greg Norman threatened to start his own Tour. In order to head that off, the PGA Tour started the WGC Events

When Major league baseball started the World Series, they were the only league.  It still produces a champion of, by far, the best league.

If you can put together a baseball team consisting solely of guys not already playing in the MLB, and beat whoever wins the World Series, you would have a point.  I'm thinking you would have a hard time doing so though.

The only fighting chance you'd have is if you just grabbed the Cuban national team. And maybe a few relief pitchers from Japan :)
