I've been meaning to ask this for a few weeks but keep forgetting...

When you grip your driver do you set the club head on the ground and then grip it with both hands while the face is angled at the sky?  I could swear I saw Mark Crossfield do this in one of his videos and then hit a ball and I'm having a hard time believing this can produce a straight drive.

Up until several a few weeks ago I was gripping the club with both hands, hovering it in the air several inches behind the ball and rotating the grip in my hands slightly to bring the clubface verticle.  Someone showed me an easier and more consistent way to accomplish this and it involved laying the clubhead on the ground (face angled at the sky), gripping it with my left hand, lifting it off the ground and then gripping it with my right hand.  When I do this the clubhead seems to pop into perfect position.  I'm guessing this is by design and not some wierd stroke of luck but at the same time I'm still a little confused by the Crossfield video.

How do you get the perfect clubhead orientation when you grip your driver and is there a 'best way' to get the perfect clubhead orientation every time?

I would not recommend rotating the clubhead when you already have your hands on the grip.  Figure out the face angle you want and grip it from there.  If you grip it then close or open the face, you change your forearm and potentially your body alignments.  There is no "best way", just the best way that works for you.

I tend to do something similar to what Hogan does here.  Grip it in my left hand with the club head elevated, then put my right on.  If you get the hand placement right, you're not going to screw up the face angle that much.

Obviously not Hogan ;-)

My only problem is, i have a hard time seeing what is square for the clubface, or how much open i need. Its like if the club isn't on the ground, i don't have a reference. Maybe i should mark my grips, like open, square, closed. Just give me three grip settings to go by.

I first place the clubhead on the ground, and check it´s squared, i don´t aim yet. Then i grip with my left hand first and then place the right one; once i have gripped the club, the clubhead must keep the same original position, meaning that both hands are in good position and will work as one. Then i aim and hit.. It´s easier to do than to explain.
