Ok - so here is my story

I get to the course - I feel great - i stretch and swing the club a few times  - sometimes i even get there early enough to hit the  range

Then

I step to the first tee box and all hell breaks loose.

I end up shooting 53 on the front then turn around and shoot 42 on the back (literally this just happened this past Sunday)

Problem is is happens all the time now.  I can shoot in the 80's and have done it consistently for the last two years UNTIL this summer.  I have lost it - at time i even creep into the 100's

I am LOST and FRUSTRATED

At least you look stylish shooting 53 ;-) Darius, I would recommend posting a video of your swing so we can have a look.  I'd be happy to help you out.

Post the swings here

This might be a good thread to check out to help with the first tee nerves

Lol, sounds like me. My inconsistency with everything but putting is what kills me. Distance control is there, and I know my club distances, but accuracy evades me.

No other sports hurts you like golf. In basketball you dont just wake up one day unable to shoot. In footbal you dont wake up and for some reason you cant run or cut but in golf man is it day to day I hate this sport that I love so much!!!!! Lol or maybe I love this sport that I hate so much

What are you hitting from the tee? Best thing I have ever done was to play an entire round hitting nothing but 4i off the tees, unless it is clear that a 4i just wont due. I was almost Pro (CPGA) and a Master professional told me to play one round from the whites with nothing but my 4i, PW, and putter. It changed the way I attack holes and control the ball.

Sounds like you bounced back well, at least. 42 ain't bad.  I've played in the 80s for my last 16 rounds, but 17 rounds ago, I shot a 98! It was a 46/52, so not quite the inconsistent round you had, but it was an outlier from the rounds before and after it. Funny thing was that I felt great to start the round, and I never figured out why I hit the ball so poorly that day, other than I played fairly aggressively (and continued to try to make hero shots when the round went south). What I learned is that you can never be certain on any day if you've "got it" or not, until the round is over. Even when you're shooting 80s for a stretch, an upper 90s day can jump up and bite you. A few OB shots at the wrong times, and the scores can get ugly pretty fast.

I typically tee off with my 3 wood (i can carry it 270 pretty easily  - i get 300 every now and then) - but that is a great idea bc as i think abou the course the back 9 gets much tighter and I do tend to drop down to my 4 iron on the back.

But man it kills me that sometimes i can go out there and play my but off and other times womp womp wooommmmppppp i lose a quick 20 bucks

Man that is so the truth - i go up and i am happy but the only problem about the ride up is that the fall is looming

LOL man i hate to love this game at times

Its the nature of being a 16 handicap. Really the closer you get to scratch the less your rounds will vary. Its just because you have more of a solid golf game and it isn't volatile.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
