Anyone Wear a Back Brace for Lower Back Pain?

Let me start out by saying, my spine is both twisted, and curved. I've seen numerous MD's and Chiropractors, I get more long lasting relief from the later. Working in construction for 25 yrs didn't help either..lol So, I know about all the stretching, which I do. It's the bending over that affects my back the most, so today I thought about getting a quality back brace that I could wear under my shirt.

I got one from the doctor years ago, and although somewhat restrictive, it did help. I have never worn one while golfing, and I'm wondering if any of you have and how it worked out for you.

I have disc issues ... my back isn't as bad as yours, but 2 advil before a round usually helps significantly in my case.

I changed my swing to an S&T; based pattern and it has helped a lot.

I had lower back problems, doubled over and crawling to the door, for years with the 90's type swing.

But good luck with finding a brace.

He actually just means more of a centered pivot pattern ;-)

What is a S&T; based swing ?  I've been out of the loop for some years.

Biggest piece that might help the back is post impact and into the followthrough where you have the hips forward and the belt buckle facing the sky.  The 90's type swing Mr. D mentions can compress the lower back because the head moves forward and legs stay bent for too long causing the belt buckle to point towards the ground.

Yes, thank you, Mike.

I've gone to a center pivot swing where it allows the golfer during the backswing to flex the front leg more as you turn and lose flex in the back leg and turn the hips along with turning the shoulders.

Contrary to popular belief, you can turn the hips as much as you want while turning the shoulders, placing less strain on your back, keeping your head still, and extending the back so there is even less strain all the while straightening the back leg to where it is fully straight if you want.

At the end of the downswing, your legs straighten again, and you extend your belt buckle and extend your back, relieving more pressure on it.

I was not certain how to label my swing -- it is based on the 5 Simple Keys.  A few years ago, I began a swing change based on what is labeled as a Stack and Tilt Pattern - but that has changed as we have learned more, and now it is based on 5 Simple Keys - an easy to understand way of playing golf.

All I can say is that once, I used to be intensely sore in the back after a range session or round, and now I have no issues.

Thank you mvmac. it's funny because I've been working on those same things. Having been away from the game for 10 yrs, however,those vid's give a strong visual, which makes it very easy to understand.

Best thing you can do, exercise. Yoga, Pilates, basic strength training. Get your whole body in better shape, and you can take a ton of stress of that back. I know when I haven't worked out in a while, my bad starts to get bothered by my days sitting at a desk. When I am active, I have very little or no pain at all. I recommend the first two, Yoga and Pilates, because they are low impact and will improve both mobility and strength.

I'll just add kettlebell training, great for posterior chain

@mvmac Do you have any good resources on this type of training. I just tweaked my back doing a dumbbell dead lift today, and this happens about once very 12-18 months. My abs are pretty strong, so I think its just how I work out.

I bought this back brace earlier this year when I had a herniated disc and thought it was good. I've never used to to play golf because it's very restrictive, but if you really need to wear a back brace to play golf, I would recommend not playing at all.

I noticed you haven't seen a physical therapist yet. When my back was injured, I've not once been to a chiropractor. I went with physical therapy because I think PT will you strengthen the muscles that are support your back (core/abs, thights, glutes, etc).

Maybe I should have mentioned that my back has been in bad shape for the last 43 years. During that time, I've tried almost everything. I use to lift weights, I studied Tung Soo Doo (Korean Karate) for over 10 yrs, both helped to some degree. I will for sure try the suggestions above.

Some good news to report. Since I've been practicing the S&T; method, my back is feeling much better, sure it still aches a bit, but not nearly as bad as it did with my old swing. I think I'll just keep working on my irons for the next week or so, then add my woods, and driver in to the mix.

I wish this site was available when I first started playing.. :-D

Thats awesome! To tell you the truth S & T is the only way I can golf pain free. I have no idea what it is and who cares just keep doing whatever works for you.

Today I went to the range. Back felt a tad stiff, so I stretched to loosen it up, I should have stretched longer, but was running out of time. So, with the ole back a bit stiff, and ever so slightly sore, I began with my PW hitting 1/2 shots hoping to loosen up. I then tried some 3/4 shots, while my back wasn't 100% I tried some full shots. I pick out one of the targets at 125 yards, I did my routine, made sure my set up was what I wanted, took 2 practice swings, my swing thoughts were, head still, don't rush. I swing and I hit a long (for me) push draw, my shot goes almost 150 yds., I check my set up, and sure enough, that wasn't the target I aimed at, so again, I did the same with the same result.

So, I open my stance up some, make 2 practice swings, and let er rip, low and behold my shot goes right where I wanted it to, but the flight was higher, and went about 135 yds.I could feel that I definitely flushed it. As I progressed up to my longer irons, and 3 wood, the same push draw would happen about 35% of the time, I'm not sure if my grip is too strong, as I used the same grip I did before I stopped playing, or if I'm doing something else wrong. I can say that the shots I hit well, were for sure much longer than previously hit, although my ball flight is much lower than before. I should mention that because my back wasn't 100%, I couldn't slide forward as much, and it was somewhat bothersome to keep it for as far as I could get it, if that makes sense.

I don't mind the draws, as I use to hit a draw, but the pushing I'd like to get rid of. Thanks for any help.

    • You put on quite a show the final two days.  Fun to watch man.  You found your long game and were putting to one of those oversized holes I think!    I just wish my long game would have been settled enough to give you a closer match.  I had a blast, learned a lot and enjoyed competitive golf for once.   It was great to play with you and learn from you @NCGolfer.  I truly enjoyed our pairings.  Hopefully I was not too much of a distraction out there with my long game struggles.    Thanks for being a good sport about it if anyway.   I really enjoyed playing with @bkuehn1952 as well.  I had a very tough first nine out there but Brian kept things positive and we battled through it.  We played much more competitively the second time out as shown in Drew's scorecard post.  We found a way to make our abilities work together, and it was a lot of fun!  I enjoyed meeting everyone else and a lot of the guys I have not had a chance to yet.  I want to mention @jsgolfer who was my roommate and our MVP.  I wish I was able to see Jerry play more.  What I did see was a treat to watch.  He is also one of the most kind and considerate people I have met in a long time.  A true class act.   Yellow ball or white ball I take responsibility for my shots out there no matter how much weight was on each individual one.  I had a 10' putt or so for a half point on the front Saturday that I lipped out after I thought I put a great stroke on it.  I should have put that one in.  I sure hit some bad ones off the tee and I am just thankful that I did not cost my team the cup.   Finally I just wanted to say one more time, thank you to @iacas and @mvmac.  I know that this was a lot of work for you organizing and making this a truly special experience for us all.  I hope everyone who was there could see how much work this must have been for them and how it was done to give an incredible experience to the participants.  Thank you guys so much!  
    • Finally again a (really) good tournament from Joost. Battling for victory until the final hole, coming up one shot short against Garcia to get a second place. Which raises him right back into the top 100 of the OWGR. Hopefully a good finish of the season in The Final Series, good points and money to earn there.
    • My answer depends on what you mean by "manage on the course."   I have a bag full of swing thoughts, because I have made the same mistakes so many times and corrected things so many times.  It's like a bag full of clubs.  I carry them around with me but I only use one at most when I'm addressing my shot.  But which one it is depends on what happened on the last shot or sometime in the recent past.  Then there are the times I have no swing thought at all, but hit a great shot.  But definitely I cannot have more than one swing thought in my head when I'm about to hit a shot. 
    • I voted 4 and 0, not based on the definitions you provided,  but based on your vote (9 and 1), and how I would compare my game to yours.   I think if you hit a solid shot 9 out of 10 times, then I should say I hit that kind of shot 4 out of 10 times.   I believe you would define "sweet spot" as much much smaller and more elusive than I would, but we have to agree on a definition, so taking your definition, which is really, "a spot you hit 1 out of 10 times," then I should say less than that.  So I said 0. 
    • I've been trying to get all the stuff J.C. talks about, but it's' tough. On a more serious note, I try to limit it to one or two.
