I use a Maltby 7 wood and have used it since last year and it is my go-to club in tight situations. I also use it in place of hybrids as I don't carry any and plus I can hit it out of deep rough with the same ease as a hybrid, for me. I get a very high ball flight with mine as I put a shaft on it for that reason and can get around 220 out of it on average. For me it is one of those clubs I know on very tight tee shots 9 times out of 10 I am putting it just about where I want it to go, big confidence booster club.

I use a 7w and no hybrids, long end is driver 10.5, 4w 16, 7w 20. My well struck ball range with the 7w is 215-230. Basically I use it for anything out of 4i range, tight tee shots, recoveries and approaches on short par 5's. Home course has a sub 500 yd par 5. Also have a 3-4h but where I play the fairways work through long grass better with less risk of popups.

What a difference a few months make. I've swallowed even more pride and went to a 43" driver 12, 3w 15, 5w 18 and 7w 21. Took out the 4i even though I hit it well, but I am at 14 clubs with 5-PW 50 54 58.

I am absolutely amazed by this Adams Tight Lies 7w thus far.  So easy to launch with a high draw.  I usually feel I have to set up way open and hit a fade to get any height at all with a fairway wood.  I can just take my normal set up and swing with this thing.  I can hit it out of just about any lie.  It is easier to hit than a 3h for me and I launch it higher and a bit farther.  I will continue to test and write up a review on this thing next week.

So how does the 7w fit in your set up?

I needed something I could advance the ball from longer distances from the thick stuff.

Other than that here the are distances off the deck :

3W: 220-235(depending if I can hit anything higher than a stinger, right now it is only 220-225.  I need a little blue pill for this club at the moment)

7W: 215ish maybe 220 on a warm day.

4H: 200

I heard McDowell interviewed after his -2 round at the US Open today. He hit a 3 hybrid from the rough to the 18th green, so I'm guessing he's not a 7-wood man. All a matter of personal preferences, of course, but it's interesting to see how these "easier" clubs are making their way into top players' bags.

The more I practise, the luckier I hope to get.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
