It's Final, I Really Can't Stand Gary Koch

Recommended Posts

Aside from his, "Well, Johnny.....," "Well, Dan....." at the start of EVERY sentence, and every third word from there being "golf" (e.g., "the golf ball," "the golf course," "the golf swing," " the golf shot," and on and on ad nauseum), he sets up EVERY shot to be the hardest shot ever faced by any human on a GOLF course. In the end the ball would end up well within "acceptable" by most measures after Koch has set the shot up to be impossible and makes it sound like the player completely botched it.

"you know, Roger, the rough was laying sideways right there, and he has to carry this small ridge, but the golf ball will run away from there....there you can see where the grass grabbed the golf club, and then it looks like his eyes blinked just before impact, and you can see where his weight just got really outside and he blocks the golf ball out to the right but then compensates by throwing his hands....but that's not a bad result....but that's a difficult putt from there...."

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

I just get annoyed at how he always seems to repeat things. "Will it stay?" x 4

I forget who it was announcing for the bridgestone but I remember Tiger being in the rough and the announcer saying there is absolutely no way he can get to the green from his position, and he kept repeating it, and then Tiger goes and puts it 20ft from the pin about 30ft deep onto the green....Announcers are crazy sometimes.

More like.. "will it stayyyyyy...?! no Peter it wont....." and so on. I stand by Paul Azinger still being the most entertaining commentor in golf, selfishly im going to ask him to stop playing and get back in the booth. Mcords another one i get annoyed with pretty quickly.

You're right, it's more like "stayyyyyyyy" (times four). Ugh.

Yesterday the local station had a bit of a glitch where announcer cameras weren't working, but everything else was. I got to watch about four or five shots - I heard clean club contact, caddies talking, and crowd noises. It was AWESOME. Then they fixed their technical glitch and the announcer track picked up. Dammit. HDTV is nice, but I honestly think I might choose SDTV with the ability to turn off only announcers if it was an option.

I have to say I prefer CBS golf coverage, hands down, every day I can see it.

I dont care for most of the NBC staff and I especially dislike Johnny Miller. He doesnt "call it as he sees it" he's simply a dickhead.

I like the banter on CBS. I like that they are honest about how well or how poorly a pro hit a shot...

I however do not like Peter Kostis analyzing the same players' swings over and over again... and I disagree with his plane line over the top of the players' shoulders... with the line that steep its easy to bring it from the inside

I agree about CBS, I enjoy Faldo in the booth but like you, Kostis must go imho, he is to much over the top for me. I do like the slow mo camera though, in the PGA Championship they showed Tiger in the deep rough (Kostis stated, look at the power in his forearms bluh...bluh....) but it is great to see the club face hit the ball in slow mo.

Gary Koch always thinks that every chip shot is so hard. It's like "it's a great lie, it's not THAT bad" and he's always like "They'd be lucky to get this within in 10 feet, realistically probably 20-25 feet" I'm like LOL.

I know what you mean, the ball can be in the middle of the fairway sitting on a tee and he'll say "With the ball above his feet, he'll have to gaurd against the golf shot going left".

Beware of old dudes with old clubs and new grips.

Azinger and Faldo together were the best IMO, didnt Mccord do some with them too?

The worst have to be the nation wide tour guys and kelly tillman, she sucks.

I agree, Nick Faldo is a great one.

Usually use NXT Extreme's or HX Hot's

You are preaching to the choir here. Koch uses the same tired expressions over and over and over and over........... Not to mention pointing out the incredibly obvious with almost every breath. He is my least favorite announcer of all time (and I'm including Steve Melnyk in that category!) If I were NBC I'd get rid of him completely. Curt Byrum would be a good replacement.

Never have liked him...That whiny, drawn out shot description he has  on shots around the green is really annoying.

I don't knoowwwww.... I don't knowwwww. Like fingers on a chalk board.

I agree completely - I would love to turn on or off the announcers.  Nantz would be powered down at my house because he never says anything that is not patronizing.  Blah blah.  I would also like to be able to add or subtract the leaderboard and scrolling graphics, at will.  It seems like these features would be obvious viewer preferences.  Not sure if this technology will ever come to television or if we will just all wind up watching things online with these features available.

Some of the British characters like Peter Alliss have a knack for shutting up which I appreciate.  Also, tennis announcers tend to be quiet and calm, but even when I have found tennis online without commentators I have preferred it that way.

    • Not for athletes who want to be elite in their sport.
    • So you think there is nothing unusual about the amount of injuries and surgeries he has been through so far?
    • Better stuff today.  Backswing mapping, watching the club go back to where I want it, pause and feel the position, take it back to address, and repeat while looking at the ball.  Some feels I am playing around with.  1) Feeling like my right hand is pushing out away from me to keep the right arm extended. Really actively resist the momentum of the swing to collapse the right arm. I can't do this early because I will just push my hands outward. It's like A2.5 to A3.5.  2) Feeling a bit less flex in the left wrist at A3. I can't do this much or I will just roll the club inside. I caught myself doing this a few times and stopped.  3) Like above, feeling the overall body position at A3. I ideally want my swing to be A3.5 in length. Downswing, I got to really feel the pause again.  I also was doing some downswings while looking at the club at A3-A4 just to make sure it was going down and not out. I kind-of can hit the ball flush while not even looking at the ball. 🤣 Yea, trying to disconnect the hands down and tilting back to lower the club is difficult.  Also, even if I get my hands down better, I end up hitting straight hooks or flipping straight cuts. The club doesn't come in flush a lot. I definitely feel a flip at the ball the ball most of the time.
    • Day 4 March 15th, 2025 hit about 20 golf balls, a lot of non-hitting practice. Backswing length to A3 feels, downswing stuff.
    • Take this with a grain of salt but, when I see high speed/high leverage freewheeling swings like yours (from your swing video), it makes me think that considering the combo of outward and downward pressure required, you might not be applying sufficient downward pressure through impact. Tendency is more out than down. A good analogy is keeping an inflated ball pushed down underwater in a pool. I think it is the hardest force/pressure component to master.  It's a guess. I also think back pain is a symptom, theoretically speaking.
