Big field this week… but it's now two weeks in front of Augusta, so, that's to be expected.

I bet Spieth is psyched to be playing in his home state.

As always I'll be pulling for Paddy to play well, I believe he needs a win for a Masters invite :~(

I'm also cheering for Minnesota born Cameron Beckman who was narrowly beaten by Woody Austin at Sanderson Farms late last year. He could really use a win and San Antonio is now his hometown. Hope he's prepared.

Kind of surprised Rory didn't join this tournament after finishing 2nd last year.

While living in San Antonio years ago, it seemed like every weekend the local San Antonio golf radio show would be touting what Jimmy Walker was accomplishing on some tour -----now that he's hit the big time with a lot of recent success, I think other than winning a major, The Players or Fedex Tour Championship - Walker would want to win this one in front of your family/friends.

In case anyone is wondering what is going on...

That is a lot of fog.

I just scrolled through the full play by play of his scorecard after 8 holes. Nearly every hole is the same. Decent off the tee. Just missing the green on approach. Leaving 4-10 ft for his up n down. Missing par putt. Ouch. +6 after 8.

so much for the Texas home field advantage people had been talking about ----maybe he put too much on winning in Texas.....

looks like they had some bad fog to start the day....

Edit: now +5.

Phil and Jordan both struggled today.  Phil had problems with his putter and irons today, though most of his putts were because he wasn't getting close to the hole with his approach shots.

Looking at the top of the leaderboard I wouldn't know if this was a PGA event or a Nationwide event. Good Lord. What's going on this year? I understand the parity, but this is taking it to a new extreme and I'm not so sure it's good for golf.

I know! When you see guys like Pat Perez on the leaderboard, something major is wrong! I hate that guy.

It's not looking good, I watched Phil mess up a greenside bunker shot that even I could make and it doesn't look like he'll make the cut.

Not a fan of his, either.

Ya but did you see that big rock in front of the ball? It affected the way it came out.

I'm not worried about Phil, he'll be able to head out to Augusta now for some practice.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
