Hi all,

Definitely the thread for me here. Have played the odd casual round or three each year over the past 5 years or so, but have taken it more seriously this year - managed to fit in around 15 or so rounds this year and progressed from the 130's(!) to around 110 the last couple of times out. My putting and irons have improved considerably since the start of the year, have backed away from using the driver as much but still getting the blow up holes - particularly in the middle 6.

Got a couple of lessons to improve my swing mechanics, have a voucher for three more in the new year and have spent a lot of time reading these boards and watching YouTube to find tips to try and improve my consistency. I've recently joined a club that's 15 minutes from my house which has golf throughout the winter, and invested in some decent Mizuno improver irons so really looking to break 100 in fairly short order.

Best to be specific, have a time limit and write the goal down somewhere, so: My goal is to break 100 (with no gimme's or mulligans) on my home course by end of April 2015.

Welcome to TST!

I like that you set a goal and I'm sure you'll break 100 in short order, too.

As you improve you're going to want to start using your driver more.  You don't want to have to consistently use a long iron, hybrid, or fairway wood as your second shot.

Good luck!

Christian

I believe it is taking a step in the right direction. Playing honestly lets you know where you really stand. Now I can only improve! What are you shooting now?

I agree, playing honest is huge. I was shocked to find out how few people play honest. I would average in the mid to upper 90s if I scored the way they do. However, I had one 49 on 9 and lots of scores in the 102-107 range. When your honest you can truly see your progress in the game. I had a round where I got 4 pars in a row but three really bad holes hurt me but I left happy with my ground. Slowly, I will get myself to the bogey thread on this site.

Played Bethpage Yellow yesterday (68.6/118) and shot a 99 (47/52) on Par 71 - about 3 strokes better than for my HC.  Not too bad for winter golf!  Most happy about 0 penalty strokes.

Also happy about my 4th round of the year under 100, and all coming in the last 8 rounds I've played!

Pars:4

Bogeys: 7

Double Bogeys: 3

More than DB: 4

GIR: 4

FIR: 5/14

Putts per hole: 1.94

Nice job man! As others have said, you're working your way out of this thread.

Thanks!

One of my golf goals for 2015 is to get my HC down to 22.9 because that would mean that I would average a 95 on the majority of the courses I play.on.

Then I can spam @Lihu 's thread.

Looks like I will be getting my first ever season pass this year. I am pretty pumped. I found a course in Indy that has a $650 walking membership including the range. If you pay in full by March 1st you save $100. It is a Gary Player designed course. This perfect for me, I just need to get on the course and play.

Nice!

Wish I could find such a place in Albany.  $650 I could swing but places around Albany that I've been told about cost a few thousands...which I can't swing.

Played a 9-hole scramble with my girlfriend from the Ladies tees the other day. I only played with my irons, and I've started controlling them better off the tee, but I'm suffering to control anything above 7 iron off the deck at the moment. I hit much more fairways than usual, my approach shots from 100yds in was a lot better, my putting was worse though (used a shorter putter). I'm hoping to get under 110 in my next round. Just a question, I'm scoring 114 at average, would that be close to a 42 handicap on an average course?

Last 18 hole round before going off to university. Shot a 109 (No gimmes or mulligans)! My long game was better than ever! But I screwed up off the tee and around the green, 5 lost balls, 5 three putts and 3 duffed chips. So I basically lost 18 strokes through that. Really have to work on my putting and chipping for a while, Off the tee I just have to gear down a bit. But I'm happy. Great start to 2015! :-D

Snuck in one more round before we leave. Scored a 106 (53/53)! So I'm real happy with my progress. Lost only 2 balls, chipping and driving was still quite shitty. My putting went better, had 33 in total (three 3-putts), but the last 5 holes all of my 1st putts stopped 1 inch short or next to the hole! They just wouldn't drop! My recovery shots were outstanding today! Here are my round's stats: Score: 106 (+34) Penalties: 2 Putts: 33 (1,83 / hole) Chips/Pitches: 23 (1,28 / hole) FIR: 4 / 14 (28,6%) GIR: 0 / 18 (0%) Pars: 1 Bogies: 5 Doubles: 7 Triples: 5 Where do you guys think I should focus on when I play again?

A quick look seems to indicate irons. 0 GIR, and 4/14 FIR sounds like your driver is currently better than your irons.

I don't know.. You don't know how far left or right he is when he wasn't in the fairways? I am willing to gamble that anyone shooting in the 100s need to automatically work on their driver ;)

Well, on a lot of the holes my tee shots are shanked, so I have trouble reaching the green after that. The times I hit the fairway, I miss a GIR by very little, mostly off the green by only a few feet.

Not sure about anyone else, but the thing I need to work on is ... everything.

+1 but i shot a 97 on the first round of the year last Friday on ground that was so frozen that you couldn't put a tee all the way into the ground and just getting it in the turn took a minute or two.  I played in similar conditions last year and had forgotten how much "fun" it was seeing my second shot hit the greens and bounce high off them.  Made for some interesting decisions on where to land the ball to try and get on the greens.  To say I failed miserably figuring that out is an understatement.  Anyway, started off the year shooting under 100 so I'm not going to complain.

Rating/Slope: 70.7/ 120

Par: 73

Score: 97 (+24)
Penalties: 2
Putts: 34 (1.89 / hole)
FIR: 3 / 14 (21.43%)
GIR: 1 / 18 (5.56%)
Pars: 5
Bogies: 5
Doubles: 6
Triples: 1

More than Triples: 1

    • Ooh, I don't know about that. I've hit flop shots that are 6-7° down. The more you widen the spin loft the less ball speed you put into the ball.
    • Re: your graphic, ‘ I expected a little more from a varsity letterman.’ Lol…just another one for @boogielicious
    • Can't brag about a 50 last night but it was the best round of my season (4 rounds of 9 holes) so I am not as upset as I could be.  One thing I am noticed is that I got a little more confident in my long hybrids and I attempted a couple longer shots that typically I would just lay up and those holes were a big part of the lower score.  Not every shot was great but good enough that they helped.  I even shot par on a Par 5 after taking a drop.  On that hole I would usually lay-up to @ 100 yards and often miss the green altogether with my 3rd shot (or worse chunk my approach and put it in the waste area).  Yesterday I went for it from @ 200 yards out with wind in my face and landed in the waste area short of the green.  My drop left @ 40 yards in and I stuck it to 3 feet for my par putt.  If I had laid up I would have avoided the penalty stroke but likely would not have been on the green in regulation and may still have been working for par.  By going for it I gave myself a chance at birdie and still saved par. I do not plan on being crazy aggressive but I think I tend to be too conservative at times so I will "go for it" a little more often going forward.
    • Day 14 (15 May 24) - Worked with the SW in the backyard, short pitches from 10yds up to 30yds.   Focused on ball placement in stance - ball back, ball forward, ball center.  Afterwards moved to inside the shop to work on putting pace on the rug - putting one way gives about an 8' putt, going the other a 6' before bumping onto the adjacent rug.  Focused there on the line - picking a target point about 18"-24" out and making sure the ball rolls through that point.
    • When someone is trying to validate their choice, statements concluding with "right" are often the MO.  Too bad he thinks he has to keep defending his decision, just do like guys like DJ and HVIII - take the money, play the tourneys and keep quiet.
