No comments on Mr. Thorpe or Mr. Dent, or Mr. Elder?

Actually Lee Elder predated Calvin Pete and was the first black golfer to play in the Masters.  He won fewer tournaments than Peete, but he would be the one who truly cracked the race barrier on the PGA Tour for the first time.  Jim Thorpe and Jim Dent were also pros from an earlier date than Peete.

A quote from Wikipedia on Lee Elder's experiences with the racial issues on Tour. If not for Elder's efforts and perseverance and dedication to changing racial attitudes, Calvin Peete might never have had a chance to achieve the success he did.

Makes me sick to my stomach when I read and hear about these past incidents and incidents today.  When will the human race grow up?

Didn't Trevino have the same incident at Augusta?

The make up of golfers in my area is all over the map (globe, that is). A few people were trying out different swings, and helping each other out at the range last night. They all had different racial and ethnic backgrounds.

I could hear their accents, but they were all talking golf together.

More people will appreciate the golfers like Lee Elder and Calvin Peete in the future.

BTW, I read the book "Uneven Lies: The Heroic Story of African-Americans in Golf" by Pete McDaniel , Tiger Woods (Foreword by)

Excellent read.

Will you be starting threads for all of the many players who were overlooked despite an adequate but largely unremarkable PGA Tour career?

How many of them are still in the record books for being one of the best ever at any aspect of golf?

If you want to start a thread on Dave Stockton and his exceptional putting ability, for example, and where he ranks amongst the best putters of all time, I think you might actually find some people interested in that.

But while I was mainly interested here in Peete's golf game, it strikes me as odd that so many people would think his historic importance as an African American in what was not too long ago a largly segregated sport is not also something worthy of discussion and attention. Isn't it obvious that this also gives him a little more historical importance than someone like Dave Stockton or Scott Hoch?

In other sports, it seems that guys are memorialized who were pioneers of desegregation.  In baseball, sure Jackie Robinson was also a superstar, but plenty of people also remember Larry Doby. In Tennis, people know the name of Arthur Ashe. In golf, which was actually slower to remove barriers (look at the history of Augusta for example), it sometimes seems as though the establishment is less eager to discuss and remember this history.

Granted, I think part of the reason we don't see more of Calvin Peete is that he himself is a humble guy who (unlike Moe Norman for example) never did a lot of bragging and self promotion. But at 70 years old, he's certainly a guy I wouldn't mind seeing more of as one of the elder statesmen of the game, while he's still around to share some of his knowledge and experience.

I agree, but I'd also suggest that's partially due to the limited number of African Americans on any of the Tours, for the same reason I'd include hockey in the discussion as well.

Calvin Peete wasn't the best driver of the golf ball. The most accurate, yes, but there's more to driving than being accurate. That's like saying someone is the most accurate 100-120-yard wedge player. Accuracy is part of driving, and not even the most important part.

Plus, you didn't see the PMs the OP sent, or apparently, many of his previous posts… :)

No, and it seems to be becoming less and less important. Some of that may be due to modern equipment and course layouts, as well.  In Calvin's time though, he also managed to lead the tour three years running in GIR. So it's not like it was unimportant. Of course even GIR is an imperfect measure. It doesn't tell you how close that approach shot was to the hole when it landed on the green.  If the drive was short, maybe the approach was from farther, and thus the first put was longer, etc.  It's too bad we don't have stokes gained driving stats for the 1980s.

I could see the one guy had some, lets say, adjustment issues. I don't think he started the thread though?

I remember seeing him on TV in the seventies. The only thing that distinguished him from a hundred other low profile players, apart from the obvious, was the diamond in his tooth. That in itself made him appear flamboyant, but there was nothing exceptional about his game. I much preferred watching guys like Lanny Wadkins and Crenshaw.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

You're right, I was wrong. Not the OP. The obvious guy (now banned) had issues. Not the OP.

    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
