Sorry guys, I do realize that there are multiple threads about putters already up, but none quite answered what I was looking for. I've always been a beliver in that, no matter what putter you're using, it's still you not the putter. I've been using a Titleist Dead Center, which was given to me by my grandpa. Tonite after playing nine me and my buddy played 2-5 again, and this time I used his dads putter which was in his bag (he's a lefty so he couldn't use it). It was some lower line ping putter, I was shocked with how much better it appeared I was putting with it. This got me thinking that hey, maybe the putter can help me out alot. I might look to get a new putter. I'll rule out a scotty, and or a redwood, because that's just way to much for a putter IMO, for me anyways. I'm very interested in YES!, but I'd like to know who uses one and get a first hand account-review (I read the sites review), or maybe a Ping G5i series putter. I like the old cavity back style type putter, any comments or recomandations would be great, thanks.

I went through a period where I hated my Ping G5I just because I personally was putting bad - I fixed my stroke and now I love it (again) I think it's one of the most underrated putters on the market.

i'll agree to this as well.

Now, i think there is an old saying, when you haver a new putter, you'll putt good until it gets to know you . A good player may have a great understanding of putting. but we all don't have a teacher/instructor when we stray away, to get us back to correct form as easily. What you're going to get from a high end SC or Redwood along with many others is an undisputable balance, craftmanship and feel to your liking. If you like a milled w/ a little soft feedback you may want to check out GM2Exchange NC putters. I have a #4 and #6 Good luck!

the Yes! putter has been described as the poor man's Scotty. I have a friend that uses Carolyne model and its the truest roll off the putter he's seen for the price and swears by it now. If I remember correctly he has dropped about 3-4 putts a round as the result of using it.

I also personally like the Ping G5I. I personally loved the way I could putt with it at the store....but I also liked the Ping Udranium Doc 15 and because I putted better with it AND it was on sale from $300 to $95 I went with that big ugly sucker :D

So I dont think you could go wrong with either

Two questions. How do you fit that thing in your bag and what type do you have?

You answered half of your putting question. Swing and consistent strokes...
The other is having your putter fitted to you. I was amazed how much better I putted once I got one fitted for me. After the fitting for the new putter (Magique golf for $20), it was trimmed down to 32.5 inches. But once I started using the fitted putter I was amazed how well I was putting with it compared to my Odyssey 2 ball with a length of 35 inches. I guess I'll need to get that one trimmed down too.
I think maybe the new one you tried may have fit you better?

That's possible, it appeared to be a few inches longer. So you all really swear by scotty's? It makes that much of a difference?

Edit: Once you've lost confidence in a certin putter is there any going back?

I know...I get quite the range of comments. It actually fits quite nicely in my Ogio bag - and I carry. The head cover sometimes has a tendency to jump off if not properly secured....so I always make double sure its on properly.

The model of Udranium is the Doc 15. I tried both the Doc 15 and Doc 15C and prefer the shaft ending near the heel rather than the center.

Sure. You've just got to banish it to the basement for a few weeks or months until it learns its lesson.

Haha, absolutely Erik! I've got a spot in my office where naughty putters spend their time waiting for their return to the rotation.

I decided that I was going to try and make it look better, to help return some of my confidence in it. The paint (it's been repainted before) was coming off a bit, so I smoothed it out, and re spray painted it, and took a model paint kit and painted in the lines again, accept in stead of white, I used bright red. Hopefully when I take it out tommorow it'll be ready to go. If not the hunt continues. I really like the newport 2.5 (I think is what it's called), and am very interested in seeking out a YES!, basically because 150 is alot more reasonable for me to spend then 300

Getting fitted for the putter is a huge difference. Through a special program at work I was able to get a new Yes! Marilyn putter fitted to me for $50 (fitting and the putter). Being 6'3 I had used 35" putters, but it turns out that based on the fitting I needed one that was 33", 2 degrees flat, and a half a degree lower loft. They use a high speed camera to show you how far your putt travels before it starts rolling end over end. With my old putter it was going about a foot before rolling. Stock the Yes! putter was sliding 5-6", and with the lower loft it started pretty much immediately. Was originally looking at the Callie model, but decided on the Marilyn since it was giving better results.

I was putting badly, but didn't want to use the money for a new putter (was looking at SC, but didnt think they would make that $200 worth of difference), so I got some lead tape and put it on top: for alignment and for weighting. I also coloured in white alignment line with a red marker and use a red marker on my A.I.M stamp, which works a lot better!!

I didn't have the luxury of giving it a time out, so instead I gave it a warning, this could be it's last year if he didn't step up. I didn't putt great yesterday but I hit all of my short puts, or 6/7 which were 4 feet and in. I'm still looking for a good deal on a YES! If anyone sees one send up alink!

    • When you've been teaching golf as long as I have, you're going to find that you can teach some things better than you previously had, and you're probably going to find some things that you taught incorrectly. I don't see that as a bad thing — what would be worse is refusing to adapt and grow given new information. I've always said that my goal with my instruction isn't to be right, but it's to get things right. To that end, I'm about five years late in issuing a public proclamation on something… When I first got my GEARS system, I immediately looked at the golf swings of the dozens and dozens of Tour players for which I suddenly had full 3D data. I created a huge spreadsheet showing how their bodies moved, how the club moved, at various points in the swing. I mapped knee and elbow angles, hand speeds, shoulder turns and pelvis turns… etc. I re-considered what I thought I knew about the golf swing as performed by the best players. One of those things dated back to the earliest days: that you extend (I never taught "straighten" and would avoid using that word unless in the context of saying "don't fully straighten") the trail knee/leg in the backswing. I was mislead by 2D photos from less-than-ideal camera angles — the trail leg rotates a bit during the backswing, and so when observing trail knee flex should also use a camera that moves to stay perpendicular to the plane of the ankle/knee/hip joint. We have at least two topics here on this (here and here; both of which I'll be updating after publishing this) where @mvmac and I advise golfers to extend the trail knee. Learning that this was not right is one of the reasons I'm glad to have a 3D system, as most golfers generally preserve the trail knee flex throughout the backswing. Data Here's a video showing an iron and a driver of someone who has won the career slam: Here's what the graph of his right knee flex looks like. The solid lines I've positioned at the top of the backswing (GEARS aligns both swings at impact, the dashed line). Address is to the right, of course, and the graph shows knee flex from the two swings above. The data (17.56° and 23.20°) shows where this player is in both swings (orange being the yellow iron swing, pink the blue driver swing). You can see that this golfer extends his trail knee 2-3°… before bending it even more than that through the late backswing and early downswing. Months ago I created a quick Instagram video showing the trail knee flex in the backswing of several players (see the top for the larger number): Erik J. Barzeski (@iacas) • Instagram reel GEARS shares expert advice on golf swing technique, focusing on the critical backswing phase. Tour winners and major champions reveal the key to a precise and powerful swing, highlighting the importance of... Here are a few more graphs. Two LIV players and major champions: Two PGA Tour winners: Two women's #1 ranked players: Two more PGA Tour winners (one a major champ): Two former #1s, the left one being a woman, the right a man, with a driver: Two more PGA Tour players: You'll notice a trend: they almost all maintain roughly the same flex throughout their backswing and downswing. The Issues with Extending the Trail Knee You can play good golf extending (again, not "straightening") the trail knee. Some Tour players do. But, as with many things, if 95 out of 100 Tour players do it, you're most likely better off doing similarly to what they do. So, what are the issues with extending the trail knee in the backswing? To list a few: Pelvic Depth and Rotation Quality Suffers When the trail knee extends, the trail leg often acts like an axle on the backswing, with the pelvis rotating around the leg and the trail hip joint. This prevents the trail side from gaining depth, as is needed to keep the pelvis center from thrusting toward the ball. Most of the "early extension" (thrust) that I see occurs during the backswing. Encourages Early Extension (Thrust) Patterns When you've thrust and turned around the trail hip joint in the backswing, you often thrust a bit more in the downswing as the direction your pelvis is oriented is forward and "out" (to the right for a righty). Your trail leg can abduct to push you forward, but "forward" when your pelvis is turned like that is in the "thrust" direction. Additionally, the trail knee "breaking" again at the start of the downswing often jumps the trail hip out toward the ball a bit too much or too quickly. While the trail hip does move in that direction, if it's too fast or too much, it can prevent the lead side hip from getting "back" at the right rate, or at a rate commensurate with the trail hip to keep the pelvis center from thrusting. Disrupts the Pressure Shift/Transition When the trail leg extends too much, it often can't "push" forward normally. The forward push begins much earlier than forward motion begins — pushing forward begins as early as about P1.5 to P2 in the swings of most good golfers. It can push forward by abducting, again, but that's a weaker movement that shoves the pelvis forward (toward the target) and turns it more than it generally should (see the next point). Limits Internal Rotation of the Trail Hip Internal rotation of the trail hip is a sort of "limiter" on the backswing. I have seen many golfers on GEARS whose trail knee extends, whose pelvis shifts forward (toward the target), and who turn over 50°, 60°, and rarely but not never, over 70° in the backswing. If you turn 60° in the backswing, it's going to be almost impossible to get "open enough" in the downswing to arrive at a good impact position. Swaying/Lateral Motion Occasionally a golfer who extends the trail knee too much will shift back too far, but more often the issue is that the golfer will shift forward too early in the backswing (sometimes even immediately to begin the backswing), leaving them "stuck forward" to begin the downswing. They'll push forward, stop, and have to restart around P4, disrupting the smooth sequence often seen in the game's best players. Other Bits… Reduces ground reaction force potential, compromises spine inclination and posture, makes transition sequencing harder, increases stress on the trail knee and lower back… In short… It's not athletic. We don't do many athletic things with "straight" or very extended legs (unless it's the end of the action, like a jump or a big push off like a step in a running motion).
