Morristown NJ Golf

Visiting a buddy in the next month who is living in Morristown. Planning on playing 3 or 4 rounds while I'm out there. Right now the tenative plan is to play Crystal Springs, Ballyowen, and maybe swing out to Long Island and play Rockaway Hunting Club.

Any suggestions for around Morristown NJ? Would prefer to bag the LI trip and just play another two around the area. Going from google it looks like Basking Ridge C.C., Fairmont C.C. NJ National are all close by. Are these completely private courses? Any chance we could get onto Trump? I believe this is completely private correct?

Pinch Brook is close by - it's a little shorter, but would be a good warm up course.   Knoll West is very nice & not far.     Flanders, Berkshire Valley & Preakness are county courses - all good.

Pinch Brook is close by - it's a little shorter, but would be a good warm up course.   Knoll West is very nice & not far.     Flanders, Berkshire Valley & Preakness are county courses - all good.

His best bet would be Berkshire Valley. Pinch Brook is an executive course. Knoll West while not a CC is not county, the much lesser Knoll East is. You need to know a member to get on. Neither course at Preakness is in that great great of condition or particularly interesting. While both Flanders courses are, they are dominated by the locals and tough to get on whereas Berkshire being a little more pricey and not allowing walking is easier to get on. Plus, it's the most picturesque and resembles the other courses he's alreadyplanning on playing (Crystal Springs and Ballyowen).

My Tools of Ignorance:

Driver: Ping I20 9.5*
Woods/Hybrids: Cobra AMP 3W and 3 HY

Irons: Cobra AMP 4-GW

Wedges: Callaway Forged Copper 56* and 60*

Putters: Scotty Cameron  35" (Several of the flow neck blade variety)

Ball: Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star

Bag: Nike Performance Carry

Would definitely suggest Ballyowen and Crystal Springs. If you're making the way up to Sussex County for those two, Skyview in Sparta is a nice course as well.

agree ... although I like Wild Turkey best of all the Crystal courses (including Ballowen - can't explain it, but that course kills me every time I play it).     Everybody has different opinions, but I prefer Farmstead to Skyview in the Newton area (although Skyview has some really cool elevation change holes and doesn't get as much play, so it's in better shape).

So, the OP has a lot of good options in Northern NJ... but be aware, it's not cheap to play NJ golf if he's used to PA prices.      If willing to drive an hour west, we've got a lot of decent Pocono courses for usually well under half the price of the NJ courses (Jack Frost, Skytop are my faves).

I forget about Farmstead and I live 5 minutes from there. I just hardly ever play it.  Definitely a lot of choices in Northern NJ. I would also suggest Great Bear in East Stroudsburg on the way to NJ or on the way home.

Def play Neshanic valley then stop at thirstys bar and grill for the London broil sandwhich. Berkshire valley is also a awesome course that is right up there near morristown.

Unless someone gets u on trump your not playing. It is great though. I forgot to mention Royce brook cc. Is semi private nice course design.

I third the recommendation for Neshanic valley.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

A lot of good suggestions.  I would also add Bowling Green in Oak Ridge ( @30 miniutes awa y) which has a great layout and is well maintained.  There is no shortage of great public access golf in Morris and its surrounding counties.  GolfNow can give you a good idea of course layouts and green fees, although they do not cover every course.  And if you are going to make a trip I suggest heading west to PA rather than the congestion of NYC and LI - Shawnee is an excellent Tillinghast design that had been neglected for a while but has been polished up and is playing great.

Not to hijack this thread, but I was looking for a place to play and walk 9 holes as a solo golfer on the morning of the 4th holiday while visiting family in the Bridgewater, NJ area. Seeing this thread, I have been looking at Neshanic Valley as a potential place. The green fees on their website states the Academy Course for 9 holes, but that doesn't match the names of their three courses. If anyone can help me out on that or recommend some other courses in the area that are a good public course to walk 9 holes, I would appreciate it! Also looking for advice on the potential just to show up and get on the course as I was looking just to get in the round by myself. Thanks! Dan

Academy is their short 9 hole. Fun quick 9. Longest par 4 is 325. 4 par 3' s and 5 par 4's . Definitely your best bet on 4th of July in somerset county.

Neshanic is great.

There is also Royce Brook, which has both public and private 18s, and is excellent.

If you are totally public, then the best places have been suggested.  However, if you can get onto private clubs, the best one in the Morristown area is Morris County Golf Club.  It's an incredible course.

      Day 206 (24 Nov 24)  - An easy session with the 54deg wedge and hard foam balls / one simple goal - distance control thru backswing length while not decelerating.  Had a playing partner comment they noticed me decelerating on a couple short wedge shots in last round.  Hit from distances from close to 40yds down to 20.

      Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!

      Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
