Hi all, A fellow player will line up a shot by putting their club on the ground, then step around, get in place, lift the club and take their shot. Is this ok?

I believe it is as the alignment aid is not there during the actual stroke, but I'm curious to hear the responses of the more sophisticated rules guys.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

As far as I know, it's legal as long as he's not doing it on the putting surface. It's rule 8-2a; I'd do one of those fancy quotes for you if knew how.

8-2. Indicating Line Of Play

a. Other Than on Putting Green

Except on the putting green, a player may have the line of play indicated to him by anyone, but no one may be positioned by the player on or close to the line or an extension of the line beyond the hole while the stroke is being made. Any mark placed by the player or with his knowledge to indicate the line must be removed before the stroke is made.

Exception: Flagstick attended or held up – see Rule 17-1.

Thanks @Ernest Jones . I'm not sure how to do it on my phone, if you can, at all.

I don't think you can do it on a phone without switching to desktop mode.

And then there's still the issue of how annoying it is to copy and paste and all that jazz.

Thanks all. Pity it's legit. This person is a beginner and incredibly slow. I was hoping I could use that as a way of moving things along a bit faster. All else has so far failed. Will have to avoid said player.

You could always… tell the player he's slow, and that it's going to cost him player opportunities, playing partners, and friends.

Let us know if you figure out a good way to speed him up. ;-)

A father and son have been playing in our Saturday game.  Both are slow and mostly from taking forever to get themselves lined up. They squat behind the ball and hold a club above the ball on the target line for a while. Then they go through further antics for body alignment.

Either one or the other has been on my team for several weeks and I never got home before 2:00 pm and we start at 10:00 am.

Yesterday neither one was on my team and I got home at 12:45. When I got home my wife said "You got home early" to which I replied that we didn't have any slow players on the team.

Thing is that they don't even have a clue that they are slow and aren't very good at taking little hints.

Yeah it's crazy how long some people take to get around the course. I can get around in 100+ strokes WAY faster than a lot guys do with 80 strokes. It just goes to show that POP issues have very little to with skill and have everything to do with awareness of how God damn long you're taking!!!
