In September, I posted in this thread about shooting a 73 in our men's club's 2 day partner event. That score (a net 63) earned me "golfer of the month" for the low net round of September, and qualified me for the "golfer of the year" tournament - comprised of the 12 golfers who submitted low net rounds from each month. We played our golfer of the year event over the weekend, so I thought I would share the results here.

I shot a 44 on the front, which was actually impressive considering that my short game was like that of a 30 handicapper. On hole 3, it took me 5 shots to get down from a fairly innocuous 15 yard pitch. On hole 5, I crushed a drive to 75 yards out, dead middle fairway...... And then took another 5 shots to get down from there. Those two holes featured the "chipping trifecta" (a fatted chip, a skulled chip and a chip shanked right off the hosel). On hole 8, I had another innocent 10 yard chip to the flag and took four shots to hole out. I had no touch, no feel, and by that point, my nerves were frayed by the mere thought of standing over another chip or pitch. Tournament pressure, baby.....

I was 8 over par on the front, and with my index yielding only 8 strokes in total, things were not looking good as I made the turn. But I found a solution to my chipping woes on the back 9 - hit the ball so well that I don't have to use my wedges around the green at all. Starting on the back 9, I hit 7 greens in regulation and my 2 misses were "nGIR's" where I was able to putt from just off the fringe. I followed up my ugly 44 with a beautiful 36 on the back and hit my number, an 8 over par 80.

No trophy here unfortunately - one of my FC's played out of his mind and shot a 78 as a 12HC, for a net 66. But no one else was able to beat their index, so my net 72 was good enough for 2nd place. Considering how my round started, I was grateful to be there.

Played in my first "real" tournament of the year yesterday.  Local county, senior, amateur championship.....A-flight.  Geeesh, even typing all that kind of puts into perspective the distance between me and the guys that are actually competitive on the state and national amateur level, let alone the Pro Tour guys. :8)

Shot 82.....meh.  77 won the flight, and I'm certainly capable of beating that.  72 won the Championship flight and the overall.

I'm not really as disappointed as the number might indicate though.  Really only 3 bad full-swings.  One resulted in a wet ball double, one in an unplayable that also led to double, and one landed in the very back of a deep footprint that some knucklehead couldn't have been bothered to rake.....also a double.  2 missed 3-foot putts, one of which I rushed to finish after leaving my first putt short.  Dummy. I never got the speed of the greens down......left 'em short all day.  You'd think after 17 holes I'd have figured it out, but even my birdie putt on 18 stopped 8 inches short......dead center too, of course.  One bit of good fortune.  Blocked a drive right, towards close in OB.  Hit a provisional right at the first ball.  You're REALLY having fun when you're hitting your second provisional, and potentially 5th stroke from the tee on a shortish par-4!  Turned out that my first one was in by a good 12" and I made par......but that was a rough few minutes getting there!

Woulda/coulda/shoulda puts me right in the hunt for the flight, so I'll take that as a positive takeaway and move on.

Overall a ton of fun as tournaments always are.  Good to knock some tournament rust off before the big member/guest I'm playing in with my buddy next week too.  Hopefully I'll have something good to talk about following that one.

Sounds like you left a handful of shots out on the course, but didn't fold your tent and still put together a respectable round. That's a successful tourney in my book!

Thanks. What I forgot to mention is that 2 of those 3 doubles came on the first 2 holes, so yeah, I managed to get the train somewhat back on track, which is always a good feeling.

Opening Breakfast Step-Aside Scramble

Team came in 2nd - Net.

Windy as all hell.  Probably 25-30 mph winds

We shot 71 Even Par

We were tied for first gross lost in matching cards

Got 2nd Net with a 65.3, missed first net by 0.4.

All in all good day, we were the only group to come in the money having two women on our team.

We have our Master's Par 3 tournament today.  They set up our back 9 as all par three's.  A lot of fun.  Only problem today is the weather, damn is it cold outside.  I so can't wait to get to Hawaii.

Shot a 29 (+2), back to back bogey's on 7 & 8, no birdies.  Misjudged the wind on consecutive holes and couldn't get up and down.  Needed to shoot even to be in the money.  You would think that it would be pretty easy, but pins were in tough locations, greens were lightning fast.

Had some weird locations for the holes, was cold but a good time.  Took me over an hour to warm up.

Sadly, no. We had a blast, and the club put on a GREAT event, but my buddy and I played a pretty pedestrian tournament. We won 3 of our 5 matches, but only barely, while we were stomped in the 2 we lost. The format is cumulative points scoring, so we finished right in the middle of our flight and well out of contention. Next tournament will be another (adjoining) county senior championship in 2 weeks. Good luck on the 25th!

Our Member-Member was today,

38-43-81 with a triple and 2 three putts.  My partner also shot 81 and tripled the same hole I did. That hole knocked us out of the money.  A bogey on that hole is all we needed.

However, the day before we played the alternate shot 9 hole event and won that, so I guess all in all a decent weekend.  Just need to get rid of that one bad hole and a couple other missed putts.

I'll be playing in a Callaway World Junior qualifier event this coming weekend, but had a bit of a scare yesterday at the FRC robotics world championship yesterday. I fell down two rows of seats in the highest set of stands in the Edwards Jones Dome (which are very steep, at least a 45 degree incline) and wasn't certain I hadn't broken my arm until the next morning after my hand swelled like a balloon that night. It should be fun though and I'll post results afterwords (hopefully they're not too dismal after not picking up a club in the last two weeks due to robotics, I'll have to warm up thoroughly this week).

Played a Golf Channel AM Tour event yesterday in Palm Desert, at Desert Willow, Mountain View Course. Tied for 2nd, with a 74. Beautiful course, however, the greens were slow ~9's. Here's the link to that event's leaderboard.

Nice playing.

    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
