Lately I just can't seem to get any tempo in my swing and find myself swinging really fast which results in poor shot and contact. Anyone have a drill that they use to create a keep a nice tempo throughout the round?

Practice 3/4 length swings at 75% speed.

Besides that.

When I have tempo problems I say seventeen while I swing. Two syllables for the back swing then one syllable for the down swing. I think Jack Niklaus is who I stole that from

I also have tempo problems.  Sometimes I can get in sync not by thinking swing slow but by making my only swing thought to keep my hands and forearms supple.  Fast tempo (for me) means I am ripping at the ball, supple forearms gets me slowed down.

How does one keep their forearms supple?

You might try ....

Tour Tempo app ... $24.95.

Find your tempo by the tones, listen to the pre-round music

Long game tempo 3:1

Short game tempo 2:1

Any tightening of the arms ... and from personal experience, I get steep and thin shots... shake out the arms before each shot, and take a deep breath ... oh, and let it out...

I guess it is grip pressure. Interesting what you "think" and what it means.

I listen to music when I practice, all of it of a similar genre and tempo, which helps me stay consistent. I listen to more upbeat music due to my naturally faster tempo, but a slower style of music could help you slow down.

I also have the swing thought of "Cheesey-burger" with a pause in the middle at the top of the backswing to help me stay in rhythm. It's suitably ridiculous to take my mind off the swing itself and it is the right number of syllables for how I say it in my head when swinging.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
