I have a problem with club selection. For physical reasons, I don't hit the ball as far as I use to. I know I am in the minority here, but when I get my yardage, pick the appropriate club, I am more often than not, short of my intended landing area. Not short by a lot, but never the less, short. I figure this issue stems from the days when  I was longer hitter, and I had much better distance control of my clubs. Plus now, due to my physical limitations, my swing, and impact are not as consistent as they were a just few years ago.

After trying to figure this problem out, I just gave myself a simple solution to the problem. If the shot is up hill, and I have 140 yards, I just add, 20 yards, and chose my 160 yard club.  If it is a level shot, I just add 10 yards to the known yardage, and then choose my 150 yard club. If it's a down hill shot, I just use my 140 yard club. Since I have been doing this, I have been getting my approach shots much closer to my intended target, which in turn has helped with my putting.

I am doing the same thing with my breaking putts. As an example, If my eyes tell my mind that I need to barrow 2 feet, I just add an extra foot, and barrow 3' . This turned out to be an easier solution than trying to vary the speed of my putting stroke. I have seen my putting improve using this scenario. I have even seen a few putts fall in on the top side of the hole, which would not have happened if I had used exactly what my eyes told me.

Now as I play/practice more, perhaps in the future I won't need these compensations, but for now I am scoring better using them.

It may be worthwhile to determine your current shot zones as described in Lowest Score Wins . It is not just the distance that is important, but the overall zone and tendency of your shots.

Yes, that may be important.

And then it's important to understand the effects uphill and downhill shots have. It won't always be 20 yards, or whatever.

Unless you're playing different courses all the time, why not just remember how much the uphill/downhill affects your shot on each hole instead of having some mysterious yardage for it lol

I think at that point you should be calling that your 140 yard club.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
