I was wondering if there is a happy medium between a perfect mechanically correct swing and swing that might not be perfect, but is comfortable.

An example of this is after years of swinging my swing I am now taking lessons from a PGA Pro.  But it seems like I hit my short irons much better when I kind of revert back to my comfortable swing. I am still trying to keep the left arm straight, rotate, etc.  But just not what I would call a perfect rendition of what I have been taught.

Is this wrong, should I be striving for the perfect swing?

Hard to tell what's going on with your swing, but if you are working on changing something, doing what's comfortable is probably not going to help you achieve that. There's no reason a mechanically sound swing can't be comfortable. Comfort is just a matter of what you're used to doing. Whenever I cement a swing change, the new swing becomes comfortable and the old motion begins to feel awkward.

A "perfect" swing can only become comfortable if you spend time practicing it and ingraining the motion until it becomes your comfortable swing. For me I'm lucky in that the motion starts to feel pretty normal quickly, after only a couple buckets of balls.

What would you consider a perfectly mechanical swing?

For me a perfect swing does all of these 5 things perfectly,

With in that framework you can have a lot of different movements, so the swing can be unique and comfortable to you.

I apologize for not being real clear. Trust me I am trying very hard to do everything my pro teaches (which are the 5 simple keys) but at 60 with arthritis in my right hip and a a torn labrum in my left shoulder I just can't do everything perfect.

What I am wondering is, what I I losing when I make the best swing I possibly can (comfortable probably wasn't the right word).

Comforteble is the right word.

A perfect mechanicle swing how doesnot feel comfortable for YOU, is not the right swing for You.

That's why Ýou see a lot of different swings

All the best,

Changes are usually uncomfortable. I've been stuck between what I used to do and what I want to do, with neither feeling comfortable, pretty much all summer and haven't played or practiced enough to work it out.

Only now do I feel like I'm getting somewhere.

Make sure your teacher knows of any physical limitations you have so you don't hurt yourself. A good coach will work within your limitations.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
