Hi, I used to play a 9 HDCP but stopped playing (only occasionally) for over 4 years. I started playing back often (not as much as I would wish tough) and had not yet the possibility of taking a lesson (will do soon). In the meantime, can you guys please take a look at my driver swing and make comments?

Right now I'm struggling with thin shots and some hooks with the irons (mainly caused by bad downswing timing). I need to keep practicing and I'm sure a lesson would do wonders. I also have the chipping yips which started as soon as I stopped playing golf often. It sucks, so if you have any tips that helped you with that let me know!

Hi and welcome!

Seeing as how you haven't been playing much and looking at that swing, I'd say you have a lot to work with there. I really like the tempo!

I'm no teacher, but the first thing I notice on your swing is that you sway back a good bit on the backswing.  Just by comparing your head to the bushes in the background, I'd say it goes back as much as 8-10".  You definitely want to try and have a more centered turn.  I have a tendency to sway FORWARD in the backswing and a drill that I use is called a "wall drill."  Don't even need a club - just take swings, or at least the body portion of the swings, with the left side of my head up close to a wall or door frame.  In your case, you'd want to flip around to the other side of the door and put the right side of your head up against it.

For the chipping yips, I'd recommend abandoning chipping in more cases in favor of pitching.  Specifically, pitching like this: http://thesandtrap.com/t/39411/quickie-pitching-video-golf-pitch-shot-technique/0_30

You have a pretty nice swing. I think you need to get the correct camera angles for us to really help you analyze your swing. This is a bit off to the side and I would like to see a down the line swing to confirm some things. I recommend you read this good article on filming your swing. Record some swing and post them here.

I would start with keeping your head more steady. Less shifting right to left and more making a centered pivot.

Left shoulder goes more down, right hip goes more up, head stays steady.

Hi Peter - I actually like the way you move your head back slightly which helps to guard against constricting your weight shift.

You mentioned that you have some trouble hitting your chip shots fat. That would be perfectly in-line with what I see here in your driver swing.  The technique you use to close the clubface is that you (likely) "push" the clubface closed with the right hand.  I can tell this because you lose your clubshaft/Left arm angle a bit too soon as you enter the impact zone.  Additionally, your Left wrist breaks down too early after you've made contact.  If you look at the great ball strikers, their left wrist stays flat well into the post-impact zone.

If you agree with this... send me a note and I'll get you information on how to close the clubface correctly... which will lead to more consistency as well as more distance without having to swing harder because when the Left wrist breaks down the hands are slowing down through impact.... When the hands slow down the clubhead has to slow down... resulting in a loss of clubhead speed.

Thanks for the tips on keeping the head steady Saevel and Golfingdad. I will work on that and the tip about swinging next to a wall sounds good. I've already started practicing.

Jim, I like what you say, so if you want to give more details on how to work that out, please go ahead and post them!

After all, those 2 things are the ones I always think about the most: the movement of my hands and my head. I know Im doing mistakes there. It used to be worse when I started playing again (from previous videos I took of myself). I also think I need to get working on more flexibility. I used to go to the gym too often and that killed it for me. Working on getting it back.

I will make another video this weekend with rear view and a better front view.
