What's your opinion of this video?  Is the information correct, advisable, legitimate?

What's your opinion of Herman Williams?  Does he know what he's talking about?  I don't know anything about him.

More on a grip, I would look at this thread -

@mvmac more of a stronger grip. The pad of the trigger finger is more on the side of the club. I think you can maintain the correct position at the top of the swing with a strong grip as with a weak grip, obviously some very good golfers on the PGA Tour do.

Look at Zach Johnson, probably has the strongest grips on the PGA Tour and he's a multiple time winner and won the Masters.

I just don't see the swing faults talked by that instructor as being linked to the grip. I think they are more a function of how the person actually swings the club. I am sure there are golfers with weak and strong grips who have those swing faults at the top of the swing.

I don't think golfers are loosing power or leverage by having the grip stronger versus weaker.

I'm not a fan of actually imagining, or trying to actually get the toe of the club to turn over. That is going to happen in the swing.

When I first saw the thread title, I though it said "Sherman Williams" and we were going to talk about painting. :-)

I think the grip needs to be way off IMO to really affect the other keys.

I'm more interested in the non-grip related information in the video.  Is that really how the wrists (especially the right wrist) should be hinging?

I'll ignore the grip stuff (I disagree that you want it generally as on top as he's suggesting) and will focus on what he says about the right wrist.

It's all fine until he talks about what the right wrist should do after impact. He's teaching a LOT of roll, and that's not necessarily. Some players do it, some don't. The players who do tend to have weaker grips and hit pulls and cuts.

    • Day 106: did a stack session.
    • Day 292 - Filmed some swings focusing on the same thing (setup, grip, wrist at the top).
    • Day 182 (31 Oct 24) - Shorter session today.  Worked with the 5i - setup, alignment and overall tempo - hitting into the net.
    • Thanks! It actually briefly dropped to 5.8 at some point in July, but it felt like it was too rich for my blood every moment of the whole two weeks I held the 'level' for me to sustain it. The term 'impostor syndrome' comes to mind.. :-)) I have certainly done better than I have in the previous years to stay the course in how and what I have practiced but yes, it's a high probability that I'm leaving a lot on the table.
    • Dang... in the realm of things that probably don't matter all that much, golf slumps are the worst. Yes definitely consult a pro ASAP. Get back to hitting it solid again. Hitting the sweet spot solves a lot of problems. For me it's always the latter. My confidence grows as I hit more and more solid shots, which are the result of continuing to improve my swing thru better concepts, better practice, etc.  Yea, this for sure. And also, without a professional there to let you know you "did it better this time" it can be unnecessarily frustrating and confounding working alone. It's not that you can't work alone; clearly, you can. But during rough patches, it's always smart to consult professionals. Lessons are an amazing place to take new concepts and turn them into feels that you are confident will work. It's still really cool you consider this your best ever season. Congrats on hitting 7.8 this year!
