I disagree. He's gotten in trouble because he was overthinking it. It will take time to get away from that, but he has said himself that it is his intent. That's why he's gone back to watching himself as a kid. He is as aware as anybody that he can't swing like that anymore, but he is looking at the athleticism and the freedom. It's a nice fallback position to have, having been the best player on the planet at one time and it's not like he's ready for the Senior Tour just yet.

That's what I've gotten out of all the things he's said about his swing. He want to concentrate more on feel then he has been.

The more mechanical he got, the worse it was for him, IMO. The dude is a great athlete. He should be tapping into that first.

Tiger worked a lot on mechanics when he was with Butch. Made some big changes from '97 to '00. Not saying getting super mechanical is the answer now but you state your perceptions like they're facts. You don't know he was overthinking things.

Actually, my perceptions are based on what Tiger himself said just a few days ago. Let's go to the tape . . .

“Well, it is new, but it’s old. We looked at a lot of video from when I was a junior -- even when I came out there and had some really nice years where I hit the ball really well. We went back to some of those old videos and really looked at it. And it was quite interesting to see where my swing was then and how much force I could generate with a very skinny frame. How did I do that? How do I generate that much power? That's kind of what we are getting back into.”

He wasn't shackled with mechanics back then, and I think that is what he is talking about.

I don't see how that statement Tiger made can be translated into what you are saying

You dont know what he was thinking then and you admit to saying you are guessing about now.[quote name="phan52" url="/t/78283/chris-como-named-tigers-new-coach/144#post_1081996"] He wasn't shackled with mechanics back then, and I think that is what he is talking about. OK. So, what do you think he means?

BS. What part of "IMO" or "I think" don't you understand? I use those terms all the time. You just want to get into a pissing match instead of debating what I said.

OK. So, what do you think he means?

I take it at face value, he's trying to figure out how he hit it so far with little effort.

So you think he is just reviewing history instead of trying to utilize what he had then as a way of self improvement today?

as he stated, he's trying to figure out how he did that. He never said what he was thinking in his swing, never talked about being more mechanical or less mechanical. You are taking his statement, adding your thoughts to it and saying that's what he said. :-)

Tiger began tinkering with his swing years ago. He wrote the following a few years after his 1997 win at the Masters:

One night, a week or so later, after the elation had started to die down, I decided to sit down and watch a tape of the entire tournament. I was by myself, so I was really able to concentrate on critiquing my full swing to see if there was some flaw I might be able to work on.

I didn't see one flaw. I saw about 10.

I had struck the ball great that week, but by my standard I felt I had gotten away with murder. My clubshaft was across the line at the top of the backswing and my clubface was closed. My swing plane was too upright. I liked my ball flight, but I was hitting the ball farther with my irons than I should have been because I was delofting the clubface through impact. I didn't like the look of those things, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized I didn't like how my swing felt , either. From a ball-striking standpoint, I was playing better than I knew how.

That is getting "mechanical". Before that, he was totally into the "feel" of the golf swing but, all of a sudden he realized that he didn't like how it felt? My perception of what he said this week is that he wants to get back to that "feel" type of golf. Obviously he can't replicate it physically at his age, but it's a head thing.

JMO!!!

In my opinion, he said that over 14 years ago. Not the other day.

Dude, c'mon. Before that? He won one major BEFORE that point, and 13 after.

If you think that means Tiger's been mechanical, then… I'd say he's done pretty well "after" that point.

You can't say for sure you know what he was thinking or working on back then. Tiger has always had an instructor that's helped him with his swing.

And that's not even what's he's saying. He's saying he wants to figure out how he generated so much speed and try to replicate it. He's talking about making a mechanics change or adjustment. If he was just trying to be "mechanics free", he wouldn't be analyzing swing video.

Well, considering that it was his FIRST major as a professional, it would have been pretty difficult to win any before that.

He never said that. In fact what he DID say this week is this:

I can’t blow it out there with some of the longer guys any more . Back when I was younger a long ball was 290 [yards] in the air. That was a big ball. Now it’s 320, 325. That’s the new standard out here. Some of the longer guys, Bubba [Watson], Dustin [Johnson], they carry 325 – I don’t quite have that. But there’s other ways to go around a golf course and I think that’s when it’s really neat to be part of a sport in which you can play for such a long period of time. You can win at a very late age because you don’t have to physically dominate anybody, you just have to beat the golf course."

So, he's obviously not looking at those tapes from back then to replicate it. He's appears to be looking for something else.

Something else? That doesn't make any sense. Here's what he said from what you posted. Tiger is looking at HOW he generated speed and then says that's kinda what they're getting back into.

@phan52 your original argument was that the more mechanical Tiger got, the more his game suffered. I'm just pointing out that he worked on mechanics with Butch and even with Haney (noticeable changes) and ended up winning a lot of tournaments.

But he said in the same interview that he admits he can't do that and he says that there are other ways to get around a golf course without overpowering it. You and I, AND Tiger, know that he can't swing like that anymore, if for no other reason than age, regardless of his injury issues. He can't generate that speed. So, what could he be looking for?

It is just my opinion that he is looking at how a approached the game instinctively. He knew how to hit a golf ball, even with the flaws.

There's a difference between getting more speed (something he's been talking about for a year now) and not having Dustin or Bubba length. Tiger's quote about not having that much speed immediately follows him talking about Dustin and Bubba. I'm still baffled at how your original point was that Tiger Woods is too mechanical, and your evidence of that is a single major while he has won 13 being mechanical in your opinion. At the end of the day we will have to wait and see as it is very very early right now.

    • As a supporter of the European team even though I chose to live in the US, this is kind of good news. I'm pretty close to Bethpage, but won't be going at these prices. Neither will the crazy drunk NY sports fans who would have made this a very difficult place to play as a Euro. The tickets will go to the city types who are entertaining clients and don't care about the money. Many of them are going to sit there and watch, not get all raucous. I am not dumb enough to believe that this is going to be like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park for the Euros, but I think it will be significantly more subdued as a result of the prices. Even at $250 I would probably have been watching on the TV anyway so no real skin in the game.
    • First, it is on free TV. NBC is free to anyone with an antenna, and is on almost any TV in the U.S. with a minimal amount of effort. Charging "a bargain price" would be incredibly dumb. They charged $750 and the event sold out almost immediately. You could better argue they should have charged MORE, not less. What happens if you charge less: ticket scalpers buy up even more of the tickets because they see value: if tickets were $250, they'd clearly have sold for $1k or more on the secondary market. That's tremendous value. Fans would end up paying the same or more, or just not being able to go. Sure, a few who happened to be online at the precise moment on a fast connection and didn't fumble with their credit cards might have gotten tickets for $250, but the secondary market and ticket brokers would have scooped up the vast majority with automated processes and bots and scripts, then re-sold them later on. This way, fans get to purchase the tickets, and the PGA is earning that revenue, not the secondary ticket brokers. Econ 101. Supply and Demand. Nope.
    • Tiger Woods on Ryder Cup pay: 'I hope they would get $5 million each and donate it all to charity' Edit - the link has no title, but basically Tiger wants $5 million for each US player to “donate to charity”   They could put the Ryder Cup on free to air tv, and charge the fans a bargain price to get in.  If you have to  give the players $60 million, that’s why the tickets are $750.
