I play golf for only about a year and I think I can hit irons pretty far for my level. I practice irons almost exclusively and I hit 3 iron from the deck about 185 carry and pretty accurately. I also feel I have lot of control and when I start pushing the 3i I can easily fix it in the next shot. However, with the driver I hit only about 20 yards further and I feel like having absolutely zero control over the shot. So its absolutely pointless for me to use the driver on the golf course right now.

I certainly have big problems in my swing in general and I am trying to fix those with irons. But. Do you think I should practice driver at all? Or should I just perfect my iron swing and Driver will sort of "come along with good technique"?

I've been on this forum for a long time and I know where that thread is at :-D

You could have always just try and do a search like, "How to hit a driver". The first thread on the list would be the one I posted.

@saevel25, what can you offer to answer OP's question. Namely, will perfecting the 3i ultimately result in a grooved, effective swing which will easily transfer to the driver?  Some here will say yes, get good with 3i, then get good with 20* hybrid, then get good with 15* 3W, then, finally the  11* driver will be easy.  Others say no, neglect of the most difficult stick will not help.

Sort of like learning to swim in the shallows, vs, jumping into the deep end immediately.

Yes I would like to hear some opinions. My Pro says I should practice the driver a lot. That it is a little bit different club

In my experience the driver really needs its own dedicated practice time. It's teed up high, and that seems to be enough of a difference that iron play doesn't easily translate over to the driver. Some of it does, but ultimately, for me at least, you'll need to spend some time working on the driver specifically.

The driver swing is a little different than an iron swing. Some of the stuff transfers from your 5I practice; some doesn't. The driver swing has different goals and objectives. It should have its own dedicated practice time. A fair amount, but not what I'd call "a lot" by any stretch of the definition.

Personally, grooving irons shots were relatively easy compared to trying to groove driver swing.

I would agree with Iacas and others that you have to dedicate a separate practice time to driver, if you want to improve.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
