Not that I'm doubting the distances, but if so you must be swinging differently. I can hit my driver 280-300 or even more on occasion, but not in my wildest dreams could I ever hit a 5 wood 270 unless it hit a cart path or sprinkler head. My 5W would get me 230 off the tee at best. I had to play around with only my 3W a few months back and I was surprised my typical distance off the tee was only 235 with the 3W. If I really tagged it I could get it to 250. But I was in the fairway consistently.

Most of the guys I play with think the ball actually goes farther than it does. I use my GPS to check my distances (and sometimes theirs) and am surprised sometimes at the distance. I think I hammered it 300 and the GPS says 260 or something.

That's still a long ways. . .

I agree, that is still considerable distance. I think the amount of time that I've spent hitting the 5 wood I have has given me the ability to accurately swing faster. I mean, whenever im playing with people, they'll say, "wow you really pound that 3 wood". When they come to find its a 5 wood, and that ive out drove them, theyre usually pretty dumbfounded haha.

It sounds like your mind and body are tuned to that 5W. I would get the swing weight and all the other attributes measured, then buy a complete set of clubs based upon those parameters.

There are super light X-stiff shafts for drivers, and I bet they can match it.

Irons too, since you realistically only need up to a 7i maybe 6i?

270 internet yards = 220 real life yards.

Everyone knows that. ;-)

Lets try to keep it civil here. We all know that people go all bonkers when you voice your doubt about their ability to hit the golf ball a long way. ;-)

True, after seeing the OP's swing, I never really doubted his distances.

Lihu, thanks for the advice on club choice. Im currently using callaway xhot irons which actually feel excellent, despite getting too much carry at times. Im also using regular shafts on all of my woods, including the 5wood and driver. What would be the difference if I upgraded to the shaft you mentioned? Ive noticed that when I initially was trying out drivers, stiff shafts we're having me slice the ball consistently. Im going to take all of the info ive learned on this thread to my next club purchase, and this time around ill make some better decisions. Not that im too dissapointed with my current game, im just now wondering the potential for better play that I could be disregarding. Thanks for the info by the way

Getting fit is the best solution. Spend the $150 or possibly more to get fit properly by a professional fitter. Try to find a really good one in your area.

And if you buy the driver, they'll usually credit the fitting.

--update--

last week I bought a Cobra S3 driver with 10.5 degrees of loft, and I'm glad to say that this is the most consistent driver I've ever hit. I have a regular shaft on it, and I no longer tee off with my 5 wood. With this new driver I'm putting the ball out there 300+, I'll post a video of it tomorrow, love this driver!

Back when I was in college I played with one guy from the Unv of Florida golf team. He wasn't a starter (can't remember his name), but he could pound the ball. I remember him flying over a 335 yard par 4. It was severely downhill, but he flew it with a 4 wood! We mere mortals can't keep up with that! This was back in the early 1980's, so the balls weren't like today.

Nice video here highlighting the fact that gapping is more important than "club type/name". Basically pick the clubs that suit your swing and give useable gaps.

Should I Use A 3-Wood Or 5-Wood?:

Callaway Big Bertha V Series 10.5 Driver stiff shaft
Benross Hot Speed 16 deg 3 fw
Callaway XR 22 deg hybrid
Callaway XR 25 deg hybrid
Callaway Big Bertha 6-pw
Callaway Mack Daddy 3 48/54/60 wedges
Odyssey White Hot Pro Havok

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
