A) I doubt he holed out on every hole. So I doubt he truly "shot even par on his own ball." If your pro makes a birdie and you have a 30-footer for par, you pick it up and might very well take a "4" because, for the purpose of the tournament, it doesn't count for anything.

B) Shooting 72 on a 69.8/126 layout means that he played to about a 2. The odds of an 8 shooting six strokes less than his handicap are only about 500:1.

Given B's odds of 500:1, PLUS the fact that he probably didn't actually hole out every hole, I think that there's a pretty good chance he did.

Okay, I'll buy that. Thanks!

Steve

That was my initial thought as well. Pretty common for the ams to pick up if their pro is in for par/birdie to speed up play.

I agree with this and know it's true cuz I've done it. My point was that he couldn't have done it 4 straight days. Maybe he didn't but a -20+ would indicate pretty salty play all 4 days. Perhaps he made doubles and triples on many of the holes Perez made birdie and they just ham and egged it very fortunately while he shot in the 80s on his own ball. It actually could have happened that way so I'll retract my sandbag presumption.

He didn't shoot "even par on his own ball" all four days. He could have easily helped his pro the # of shots he helped him each day. Remember a net birdie on a hole your pro bogeys is a two-stroke swing, too.

I'm not sure why people are so quick to doubt this. He wasn't even the guy who helped his team the most… he was THIRD if my skims of @Golfingdad 's posts were right.

In the 80s? Shooting 78 on that one course would have got him his handicap. They weren't playing 7200 yard courses rated 74.9 with 152 slope or anything…

So are you saying distance is important to amateurs? ;-)
