Game Golf iPhone/Android App adds GPS Rangefinder

Wait, I can buy the tags and use my phone instead of constantly pulling my phone out each time? The position never seems to update until I unlock my phone and let the app use the gps to catch up to where I am so I'm not sure how well it would work.

I see, I guess turning that on would keep the app updating your position constantly instead of only when the phone is unlocked.... I may have to look into the cost of the tags....

The Android version allows you to use the tags as long as your phone has NFC. If you have an iPhone Apple blocks access to NFC for apps by second party devs. I have read they will allow NFC by second party devs on the iPhone 6 in the future. If you have an Android phone or tablet go to the settings where you will see where you can turn on the use of the tags. I have read in other forums where users have been using the tags on with the app without problems.

So on Andoid phonesnwith NFC you can use thebtagsbwith the app. But, the GPS will be on constantly, which is whybI will buy the belt unit in the future.

My mistake, I wasn't aware they opened up the Android ecosystem to the app, only the iPhone.

For what it's worth, I start my round about 100% charged, I'll wind up with 60% after using the app for about 5 hours with my iPhone 6, so it doesn't murder battery like one would think

My battery holds up pretty darn well too with a G3. It uses less than 50% for a full round. Of course that would probably change if the gps was constantly updating instead of only when I pull the phone out to tag.

[/quote] I have a 10,000 mAh external battery charger, that I could use while on course if I see it is killing my battery too fast. But, the thing is bigger than my phone. If it is not too bad I might wait until this winter to get the unit(hopefully onsale

That may be a game changer for me.  Has anyone tried to use their android phone this way?

If it uses NFC it only has to get within like a few inches of the phone I believe.

I don't belive so from what I have read,I am an Android user. You can check the app settings to see if you can use the tags. I did read that Apple will allow non Apple apps to use the NFC function on the iPhone 6, when I have no idea.

I am going to run an experiment tomorrow and probably drive my playing partners crazy. I turned the other guys onto GG and they will be using it for the first time tomorrow. I found the app (via Facebook ad) and downloaded it for a 9 hole round Sunday. Found it to be fairly accurate (more so than some of my long iron shots) but I had been looking at the GG hardware package for some time. I found a set on Craigslist for $60 and decided to take a shot. Seller said he used them one time and hated the hassle and from the look of them there is no scuffing or gouging so they appear brand new. I am going to run both the app and the belt hardware and compare the numbers post round to see if one is more accurate than the other (discrepancies will be noted and decided via google maps). Has anyone else tried this?

I adjust the locations of things after the round anyway. Nothing's ever too far off, and it takes only a few minutes.

I agree, the biggest issues I have with locations are it doesn't always put my tee shot from the tee box and the locations of putts. In general I don't care about the putting tagging outside of making sure the score is correct though. Outside of that the locations are pretty close. This is with the phone app.

It was a 2 part test, the first being which form of GG did I like better for future use. The second was to see if one was a more accurate tracking system. I had yet to try to edit a round so I didn't know how easy/ difficult it would be. I ran both the belt tap and phone app and found that I personally prefer the hardware system. It was very easy to work into my routine and didn't miss a tag all day. I didn't like carrying my phone around but I am glad I tried. I also edited my round via phone (which I ended up deleting so I didn't have a duplicate round submitted) and found it harder than doing it on my PC. The only down side was that after the round we went to eat and started comparing stats from the round and when I go to the hardware system only those won't be available until I get a chance to download them. Not a huge downside but that is the only thing that stuck out. Both seemed to be pretty accurate but I had to delete three strokes where the belt system "sensed" a swing where one wasn't taken. No big deal.

As I was reading this thread, I got an email from kickstarter about Golf Tags.  Seems like Game Golf may have realized they are going to be getting some serious competition in the market and are trying to get as many people using their product as possible.

I have used the GG app twice, once riding and once walking.  When riding I just left my phone in the cart and clicked the club before I got out - easy enough.  Even easier when walking as I used the app while walking to each shot, click click when I got to the ball and no interruption of my normal routine.

I hope GamGolf has some copyright and patents on their stuff. That Golf Tag stuff looks like a direct rip-off of Game Golf, especially the graphic interface. Also with the design of their tabs is very similar to Game Golf.
