I have a relatively new iMac. The only photo editor appears to be iPhoto, which frankly stinks.  It is the least intuitive program Apple has ever created.

It there a better one available.

Preview does more than you'd think for quick and dirty edits - rotate, flip, resize, annotation.

Photoshop is pretty much the standard, does everything but can be hard to use and expensive.

Gimp is the open source and free and comparable to Photoshop but again, can be hard to use.

I like Pixelmator as it's pretty easy to use and has lots of features.

As @nevets88 said, Pixelmaker or Gimp are both pretty good.

I haven't used the software @iacas mentioned. Is that already part of Yosemite (I'm still using 10.9.5)?

I use Adobe Photoshop daily but it's overkill for most users and, as mentioned above, is expensive (and I'd stay away from Photoshop Elements).

If you're looking to get into advanced editing, Gimp has many of Photoshop's features.

If you're looking for resizing, cropping, basic color editing, simple selections, perhaps some of the other products mentioned may be all you'll need.

I've been putting off upgrading to Photos so didn't mention it but I heard good things about it. If it has Erik's imprimatur, then I should probably stop procrastinating and upgrade to 10.10.3. One other thing - if the photo is in your iPhone or iPad, iOS apps like Photoshop Express are really easy to use for straightforward edits compared to their desktop counterparts. Or you can use the browser version of Photoshop Express. http://www.photoshop.com/tools?wf=editor One thing about editing photos. Options galore.

I haven't used it. I'm still pissed they canned Aperture. I'm still trying to figure out whether I want to trust Apple to deal with my photos in Photos or whether I should find a way to import my Aperture stuff to Lightroom.

But Scott is not starting from the same point as me.

I upgraded to Yosemite a while ago but don't seem to have photos.  I still have iPhoto.

Does it bug anybody else that Photos doesn't show the file name for each picture? (Yes, I can secondary-click to Get Info individually, but sometimes it's nice to have them all to look at them quickly.)

Or is there a setting in Preferences that I'm not seeing?
