Thanks for the replied.  I do need some clarification.  I agree I need more shoulder/body turn, but am I specifically trying to get my hands deeper?  If so, what does that facilitate?  Are there any specific drills I should work on?

Clay and his group at topspeedgolf offer swing reviews for an extra charge, which I've done.

I would look into Evolvr.com if you're looking for personalized online instruction at a very good value. It's about changing the picture for you, not so much conforming to the average golf swing.

Yes, you will want to get your hands deeper.

Except in weird cases when the club is moving dramatically out of plane (over or under the plane), you generally want the club to line up, on-plane, "behind the hands" by about A4.5 to A5.

If you have an upright swing, that's going to mean the shaft has to stay pretty upright too:

01.jpg

You can see here at this time that @NatalieB was, at the time, swinging a bit more upright. Not much left arm depth, etc. But the club was in line with her hands, and this let her swing her hands "down" the plane and the club would respond by just staying in its line behind it.

If you were to try to go shallow from where you are now… well let's look at both of these images.

02.jpg

On the left, you can swing your hands down (blue arrow) and the club is already inline with it, so it can just follow along (green arrow). You look kinda like Natalie up above. Fine. (Your lack of shoulder turn at this point is costing you some speed and distance, but you could play from the position on the left… but turning your torso more will gain you hand depth.)

On the right, let's pretend that your shaft is along the yellow line, or shallow. If you pull the hands down along the blue arrow, the clubhead will want to swing out to line up with the back side of the blue arrow. That will create momentum out-of-plane, and the clubhead will continue to swing outward slightly and likely follow the green path down. You'll go from under the plane to over the plane and swinging left. Pulls, cuts, and inconsistent contact.

So no, you don't "need" more depth, but by turning more, you'll achieve more depth. And then, if your hands are deeper, the shaft will want to be shallower too. More like either of these guys:

Sweet spot generally lining up pretty much inline with the hands. Not much out-of-plane motion.

I'd read and consider what @kpaulhus said.

Deeper by turning the torso more.

Like that video @iacas posted.

Help create more speed, give your arms more room on the downswing so they don't have to work so vertically. Also giving your arms some depth on the backswing means they'll have to move down and out on the downswing, meaning it will be easier or more natural for the shaft to shallow from there.

I'd refer you again to the video @iacas posted.

Also drills like this but for you at the end of the day it's not really about drills. You need to do the motion, you need to just rehearse turning your chest more, over and over again.

By A3 try to get the shoulders turned close to 90. Make practice backswing getting the "stick" across your shoulders to point to where the yellow arrow is. Not saying you have to look like this to play good golf but work towards it.shoulder turn.jpg

@edhalsim you and I are working on similar moves in shallowing the club, so Id love to keep seeing you post in your swing thread and together we can both shoot lower scores more consistently.

@iacas @klineka Yes, I agree both those swings are not all that shallow.  What I'm going for is that first move down.  In both examples, the shaft does shallow slightly the first move down whereas mine starts down steep and then shallows later around waist high.  I think my hands are too active at impact.  I think if I could 1) get the club to shallow just a bit starting down, and 2) don't pull my head back away from the ball before impact (I hit everything off the toe) I'd really have something.

BTW, I'm working on the takeaway portion and that part is looking better to me so thanks for that tip!

I will say again that I wouldn't worry about that part. If you shallow too much you're going to start missing the ball. You're wanting to add an out-of-plane motion. No reason to.

See also @mvmac's post, too.

    • Back in my Army days a "gooch" was a particular part of the anatomy. Example, say Okeechobee is the b-hole of Florida, then Belle Glade would be the gooch. Seems he wears his name well.
    • I can't say that I remember a lot of individual putts, but I do have one specific memory.  The first time I played the Old Course, I had hit a pretty good drive on the 6th hole.  I had about 60 yards left, and due to the swale in front of the green, there was no chance of flying a wedge on or near the green and having it stop on the green.  My caddie recommended either a running 7-iron chip or a putt, and I took the putter and a pretty hard swing.  The ball rolled over humps and through hollows, disappeared into the swale in front of the green, and re-appeared heading right at the hole.  I ended up maybe 12 feet away.  The caddie turned and held out his hand to shake mine, and said "Now THAT was a golf shot!"
    • For the first time since 2021, I made a 3 on the 12th at Stoneleigh.    395 yards, something like 80 feet uphill, I hit a solid drive and a 7-wood to inside a foot.  Even I couldn't miss that one.  I feel like I haven't played a lot of golf this year, but I'm making decent progress.
