Hello all,

I am from northern NJ. 28 years of age. I typically play Ash Brook golf course or Galloping Hills. Right now I am shooting around 100. I'm always looking to play whenever I can. I look forward to picking up tips and pointers to be consistently under 100.

Welcome to TST! I am also from the area and those two (and a half) courses are usually where I play. Enjoy the site, explore around and get to know people; maybe we'll run into each other on the course someday. Best of luck on your golf game. :beer:

One of these days, we're going to have enough people in the area to get a decent TST outing going like those CA guys.

I am curious to know if any of you know of a non-private grass driving range. I am trying to find one and I've had no luck.

Royce Brook is nice. I've never been to Neshanic, but I imagine it's pretty nice there as well. @nevets88 could probably tell you more about it. The only other place I know of is Tara Greens in Somerset and I don't recommend that place at all.

@ billchao Thank-you very much for the recommendations, hopefully I can make it out to one of them this weekend.

I also think an outing would be a great way for people to meet each other and get to know a few other golfers in the area to call if you have a cancellation in your foursome.

Hi Everyone. I'm from NJ too around the same area. Tara greens is the only public grass driving range I know of around here. Rutgers has a driving range for $5 for 42 balls, but the grass is not open to public. And they also have a pretty big chipping putting area with scary monster sandtraps that are good practice. What's wrong with practicing on mats once in a while? You know your swing is on point when you are just skimming the mat, otherwise you are getting the ball fat or thin. If you always "tee it up" on grass then you wont be confident when you get a straight up dirt lie or if you actually end up in the fairway.

We were originally going to play Quail Ridge but ended up moving some things around and are going to do the following when we go in May Day 1 Tobacco Road Day 2 Southern Pines and Pine Needles Day 3 Tot Hill Farm There are a couple good course vlog/matches on YouTube at Southern Pines, it looks awesome.

      I got two trips lined up this year.  First, Pinehurst next month. Qual Ridge, Mid Pins, Southern Pines 😁, Mid South, Talamore. I am looking forward to playing Southern Pines since it got redone.  Second, a trip to eastern Wisconsin in early August. Whistling Straights, Blackwolf Run, Erin Hills.

      You are probably doing the right thing in having more fairway woods or hybrids in your bag than irons. Just easier to maximize ball speed for you swing speed to get the proper gaps.  A driver is teed up, so you have more leeway there. The 7-wood is probably more optimized for carry for you. A slower swing speed needs higher launch and spin to keep the ball in the air. With the 3-wood, it probably launches too low with not enough spin to keep it in the air.  If you are not going to go get lessons, or do some sort of swing speed training, go get fitted for clubs. Clearly your mix-match of equipment is not optimized.

      32 putts are average for a single digit handicap golfer. Limiting three putting is the biggest task. Speed control is the most important aspect of putting. Probably the 2nd most important is aim.  The putter is going to rotate open a bit on the backstroke. It might stay square to the arc of the putting stroke, but that does mean the face opens up a bit on the backstroke when measured against where the face is oriented at address. Go get a putter lesson as well.
