Muddy Bunkers

So how do you handle the muddy or compacted sand bunkers after a rain?

Standard bunker technique? Open it up, more bounce? Pick it clean?

I prefer to open the face as much as I can but not so much that I can't get into the sand. Usually comes out a bit hotter than usual but its better than not getting it out at all. But I've never been great bunker player so I certainly could be wrong. Not that I'm bad, its just I rarely get to practice it.

i prefer to not open it as much to hopefully have a bit less bounce and hit a standard bunker shot. usually get a bit more bite from a wet compact bunker at least here in Asia.

I play these decent, as in at least get on the green. Don't set up too open, coz, bounce no good for this one. Basically pick up club and chop straight down just half inch-ish behind the ball - here's the important part IMO - let your right hand go at impact like you are just dropping the club head instead of stabbing it hard and do not pull up at all. Honestly, this is just tough (duh) but I think odds go up some..

It depends on the location of the bunker for me. A compact fairway bunker I try to pick it clean but if it is a green-side bunker I move in a little further back in my stance than a traditional bunker shot; generally followed by a few curse words and a gentle stroll to the opposite side of the green to chip.

On normal sand shots you may aim to hit a couple inches behind the ball. I tend to make that a inch or less with wet, compacted bunkers.

I carry a 60 degree, with almost no bounce and play it like a normal bunker shot, with one exception and that being a full swing with more power than a regular soft sand shot. It's a feel shot in a way. Try to borrow a wedge that has little to no bounce and try to practice it after a rain or they just watered the green, would be very beneficial to have in your shot assortment.
