I checked out the Ping online fitter. Also the length and lie chart. They have me at a +1.5 upright.

I checked the standard lie adding the lie angle versus my current set. My Mizuno irons are about 1.25 to 2.25 degrees flatter.

I was hitting the Mizuno's fine on the lie angle board.

Just wondering if I just present my hands higher at impact than the measured lie angle? I suspect there is some angle droop as well.

I just found it strange that Ping, who has the most comprehensive fitting process would recommend something so much more upright.

The only way to tell would be to get the Ping's that fit you and test them I think.

I think it is probably wrong for you Matt.  I would trust a lie angle board test more.  They are just figuring it as a guess off of height and wrist to floor comparisons I think, or something like that on the website.

I figured, I was just shocked it was so much off.

It does seem like Ping thinks the lie angles should increase more per club than Mizuno.

The 1.25 degree difference was for 3 irons, compared to a 2.25 for the 9 iron.

For some reason my online test comes out exactly the same as my lie angle fitting did.  I am guessing that is not often the case though.  I do think that length and lie angle are the two most important things to be fit for in irons.

Did you take into account the length of the shaft? If the shaft lengths are different then the lie angles must be different to attain the same effect.

All the same. Mizuno MP line matches Ping's better player irons length for length for the same numbered irons.

I look at their online fitting as a starting point, it's just a static measurement, you still have to go hit the clubs. You also may have just "adjusted" to the Mizuno's.

If you set-up with a 6/7 iron on a hard surface (kitchen floor) and slip a business card under the club (red line), the card should just reach the middle of the face and the butt of the club should point close to your belt buckle. I think if you get those two things you're going to be darn close.

Is that a good or bad thing? Should I consider seeing if I need to get the Mizuno's adjusted more towards what they should be?

Is Ping standard and Mizuno standard the same? At my initial fitting I was fit for Mizuno Standard and then with some lessons and improving my set up my teacher said I should have them bent to Titelist Standard. I assume they were different as I was shifting from standard to standard.

Don't know, try to check on those two things I mentioned. Could always get the 7 iron bent a degree upright to see how you hit it.

Is Ping standard and Mizuno standard the same?

Yes. Everyone's standard is a little different. Even clubs made by the same OEM can have a different "standard".

Online fittings are just a starting point. A Ping fitter would use the specs to select initial test clubs.

I did the Ping online fitting last summer, and got recommended this for my longer clubs from G25 family: an 18º 5W, a 17º 2H and a 23º 4H.

A check of the G25 hybrid specs chart showed the 2H was recommended as a substitute for the 5W.... go figure. :hmm:

Again, online fitting data serves as a starting point. Don't even order clubs based solely on a 5-minute computer app.

I get that. I would not buy Ping right off the website when I could have the luxury of going to a certified Ping fitter :)

Still a bit of a shock to see such a difference between my clubs and theirs. Maybe I should do the sharpie test. Get some masking tape, a marker, and draw a straight line on the ball and see how it imprints on the club. My Mizuno's might be off.

    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
