Got lamkin grips on my new irons and after 1 round and 4 range sessions, my 5 and 8 iron have already got some thumb wear marks on them. I've only really hit these irons at the range but is it normal for wear to show quickly?

They have about 8 or so different models of grips... which ones do you have?

If they are the i-line grips, then those will wear more quickly on the thumb ... just like Iomics.

I just installed some UTx and Wrap Tech grips on my clubs. As soon as the rain stops...

They say crossline on the butt of the grip. Is that the ones that wear quicker?

Are those a new model or counterfeits or something...and I don't see any wear marks.. I've played the full cord for quite some time and never see any wear marks... I do tend to see high variance in sizes colors and shapes between the cross lines though

They're not counterfeit grips. I think I've discovered it's just that there are dark dots or something in clusters of the x grip parts which are making it look dark. Hopefully you can see what I mean.

The Lamkin Crossline is an iconic grip -- people love them. I'd be surprised if they wore out soon.

My Crosslines and Ace Gens would last a couple of years if cared for...

Would not worry about the little darker cluster of black on white.

I've owned Iomics that would wear after a couple of range sessions -- if that is causing you troubles, you'd collapse with Iomics.

Thanks guys. I think I'm obsessing over the slightest thing as they're brand new irons and I want to keep them in good condition etc. Need to realise they're going to get worn and clubs will get scratched etc.

Could it be as simple as dirt/sweat from your hands?

Wipe those things off and see.

What's the best way to clean grips? Just a damp cloth over them?

Depends on conditions.

The hotter and sweatier your hands, the more frequently you must clean grips.

1. Lamkin has a product called Gripes that many people like - it's easy and disposable - like a damp wipe with cleaning agents. I think it is $5.95 for a box.

2. I have used a product called Clean and Tacky when the grips have been through a couple of sweaty range sessions --  2 sprays on the grip, use a nylon brush to scrub, rinse with water, and wipe with a towel.

3. Simple cleaning -  I've heard of Windex, Formula 409, Simple Green - a spray, scrub, rinse and dry.

4. Simplest - water and a wipe after a session. But go to one of the above, and at least a scrub with a brush once every couple of weeks depending on play.

More frequent cleaning will help your grips last.

    • I think that would fall under the general umbrella of "kinematics".  And I'm sure that @iacas will correct me if I'm wrong, but in many cases the handle will be almost motionless by the time the clubhead impacts the ball.
    • I don't think it is called anything singularly specific in scientific terms other than how you described it. Some might call it a pendulum motion or something but that's probably super simplistic and not adequate description/definition. Of course, there's a whole gamut/combo of causal physics, biomechanics and geometry that results in the phenomenon.
    • As Erik says, he can correct the Wrong Place mistake by replacing the ball in its original location, see 14.5a, as long as he does it before making a Stroke at the ball.    I agree, and that's one of the worst aspects of being a rules official.  But its also an important part, I'm sure that player learned that one rule pretty clearly, and hopefully has learned to read the NTP and listen on the first tee.
    • So while we're talking about physics I've got a question regarding physics and golf provides some excellent examples for what Im talking about. When you swing a stick in an arc the end of the stick will be moving faster than where you're holding it because it has to cover more distance in the same amount of time. An excellent example would be swinging a golf club.  When you swing a golf club, say when you're teeing off with the driver, the head of the club is going to be going faster than the handle because it has to cover more distance in the same amount of time and the longer the club the faster the head will be going because with a longer club the head will have to cover an even greater distance in the same amount of time. That's why drivers are so long, they're meant for hitting the balls the furthest so you want the head to be going as fast as possible when it hits the ball.  So I was wondering, what's it called in physics, about how when you swing a stick such as a golf club, how the head is moving faster than the handle because it has to cover more distance in the same amount of time.
    • He replaces his ball and gets the stroke for lifting his ball without having a rule allowing such.
