I haven't been on a course for over a week now, just practicing on the range and working on drills. Hit many a ball as slow as I can move to varying speeds. I'm getting slightly better at slowing down, but at least getting better at it. My ball striking is getting a little more solid, but standing next to that one SCGA player was truly humbling. I heard that extra bit of energy he puts at impact. I could kind of hear a little more swish with his irons just before impact, if that makes sense? I feel like my body motion is kind of moving in the right direction, and even that has a long way to go. Even once I get the motion down correctly, there's that extra snap at impact that would be missing until I have the body control to time it correctly? Even with the smoothest "slowest" swing I've ever seen in any amateur, he was able to get that controlled penetrating flight with his driver. In any case, this just makes me feel even less like I've made any progress. . .I doubt I'll reach any of my goals in this thread for quite a while. . .

Thursday - 96, CR 71.9/139, Friday - 97, CR 71.9/139, Saturday - 96, CR 71.2/128

HI is trending to high 17.  A few more rounds to go before 8/31 GHIN.  Anything in 17s will be good.

More lessons + apply LSW judiciously + mirror work = more downward HI trend.

I had a little math problem when posting the above scores.  The correct scores, including today's, is as follows.

Thursday - 96 - 7th best score in HI system

Friday - 97 - 9th best

Saturday - 99 - no impact to HI

Sunday - 104 - no impact to HI

HI is trending to 17.7 but the next two scores to fall out of the system are very good scores.   Hoping to keep the trend going next week.  Scheduled a golf lesson for tomorrow.

@RandallT my game with 3 round worth of shot by shot data.  Pretty interesting analysis.  I need to continue to focus on full swing practice where I lose far too many (close to 80%) strokes.

@RandallT helped analyzed my game with 3 round worth of shot by shot data.  Pretty interesting analysis.  I need to continue to focus on full swing practice where I lose far too many (close to 80%) strokes.

The analysis has been enlightening for me as well. I've offered on another thread for people who want to send me some specific data about their rounds, just PM me. I have some fancy schmancy spreadsheet reports that might give you a different glimpse of how you score, and perhaps where you might want to practice.

As @rkim291968 and I discussed, the numbers you'll get back are not perfect, but I'll offer them for your consideration. Anyone serious enough here to want to lower their handicap by 5 would likely be interested.  Basically, it'll compute a strokes gained number for:

1. Drives

2. Full swings >60yds (anything that is not a drive)

3. Short game (all shots off green

4. Putting

It strictly uses the published data for PGA, so there are tons of caveats. But it's a benchmark of sorts, and you could compare yourself against that benchmark from time to time to see if your numbers move.

The major thing I'm learning is that we all need BIG help with our full swings.  Around the green, we don't seem to lose too many strokes. But I've only run a few rounds for people. That's the initial takeaway.  Drop me a line if interested.

I've been battling bogey golf for a while. My last round was a 91. I've recently on the last month and a half carded about 6 rounds in the 80s but my last few have been in 90s. Last round I played I hit 8 greens in regulation, but 40 putts(three 3 putts and one 4 putt) and only 2 fairways in regulation. I had 5 pars, 9 bogeys and 4 dbl bogeys, while giving myself at least a par putt on 17/18 holes. I feel encouraged cause I've been eliminating big blow up holes but my driving and short game have really hurt me.

Shot a 49 last night on the back 9 at my home course, 34.6/131 from the whites, which translates into a 12.4 diff over 9.  I plan on getting out for another 9 this week plus 36 over the weekend during my club tourney.

I hope to continue the downward trend!

Good going!   BTW, over 18 holes, what is the differential?   24.8?

Yes, if I was to play the same 9 holes and get the same score...

My HCI will be at 29.7 tomorrow down .6 from the last revision and down .8 from when I first posted on the thread.

I don't think it is realistic that I will be down to 25.5 by the end of my golf season. I have 2 months left in the official MSGA(Montana State Golf Association) season. And with my kids activities ramping up for the year I am going to have less opportunities to play.  I could pull some miracle rounds out before I am finished for the year, and pigs could fly too! ;-)

Here are my last 20 scores:

@pecos24 - you and I are probably conning ourselves to reduce our HI by 5 points by end of the year. ;-) We should be happy that our HI trend is a downward one for now.

My index hit 17.3 today.....down from 23.1 in April.

So I met the goal of 5 for the season.

My goal now is

to keep it below 18, so I will be eligible for the MGA senior four ball

next spring.

Not so fast, @rcwkent :-P This thread was posted in June.  To be fair, you need to start with your June HI.   I met my "5" goal if I count from Feb when I was carrying 23 HI.   But in June of this thread's post, I was at 17.5, hence, my goal of "5" is 12.5.

OK, OK, @rkim291968 .... I'm busted! :surrender: When this thread started my GHIN was 19.7 .....   so I'm down 2.4 ....less than halfway to 5. Yikes!

It's not too bad.  You only got 2.5 to go.   My current HI of 18 is worse than 17.5 I started with in June :8) .   I got full 5 points to go.

I keep expecting you to drop back down to a 12, you can do it!

We'll play sometime in the up coming Winter months. Not trying to make the Northerner's jealous or anything, but that is the best time to play. Cool and manageable weather! :-)

My kids are too busy for us to come up this weekend. :-(

I won't drop to 12 for a long time.  I looked at my scores when I was 12 for a month.   I scored mostly in low 80s, with a 79 threw in.  It was a fluke 10 round sequence that dropped my HI suddenly from 16 and then it went back up to 16 soon after.   I conned myself that I can do it again but it turned out to be quite difficult.  The best I ever got to 12 was 16 about a few months ago.  Sigh.

(We will play whenever, no pressure.  It's likely that I will be in LA area time to time.  I will bring my clubs just in case.)

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
