Does anyone know if shirts worn by players on the PGA/LPGA tour are sold to the general public, like in retail stores or thru vendors at the tournaments?  The shirts I am referring to are the ones that have the sponsor logos on the chest, collars and sleeves.  Here's a couple examples:

Or are these type of shirts only made for the players to wear?

I think you can get the exact shirts but without the endorsement logos which I would think are customized specifically for the players. Now if you can get endorsed by the same companies for some serious dough....

I'm not sure I'd want to turn myself into a Tin Cup-style billboard without being paid for it, and I'm absolutely certain that RBC or Lexus have no particular interest in paying me to advertise for them.   Certainly you can buy the same style of shirt at the merchandise tent, but I've never seen any logos beyond the manufacturer's and the tournament's.

Yeah, I understand the style of shirts are available for sale, without the sponsor logos on them.  I was just wondering if the shirts that they wore during the tournaments, with the logos on them, were sold to the general public as well.  Kind of like when you buy soccer or rugby jerseys from your favorite professional team, they usually have the sponsor logos on them, like AIG or Vodafone or Qatar Airmways etc etc.

I think that might be too much trouble for them.  I imagine that every guy wearing Nike, for instance, including Tiger and Rory, would have a different set of sponsors.  It would be just too much trouble to stock so may different versions of each style, in multiple sizes, etc.

Nike players aren't allowed to have other clothing sponsors, all Nike or no Nike. Pretty good approach cuz those guys look clean. UA does the same with Spieth but I don't think they require it. Sorry, quoted the wrong post, meant to quote DaveP043.

Thanks for educating me, Gunther, I didn't realize that.  In that case, you probably CAN buy some of the identical shirts.  For other clothing lines, however, its probably not an option.

Good to know about the Nike shirts.  I guess Nike is paying the players enough money, they don't need other sponsor logos on the shirts anyways.

Well, if you don't mind supporting Ian J Poulter, he does put his tour shirts with sponsor badges on his site -  www.ijpdesign.com

They are not there all the time or often. Take a look and sign up. They have sales all the time. I find it tasteful, well, except for some of the tartans, but better quality material in shirts can be found elsewhere -- Peter Millar, Polo RLX Golf, etc.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for.  Those type shirts in general, not specifically Ian Poulter's.  Do you know if Ian is the only player out there that does this?

Don't know, but they don't say Ian Poulter all over them, so.... for $102 it can be yours...

This is why I bought some hats that were custom printed. I got tired of paying to do a companies advertising for them.

Zach Johnson had 6 sponsors on his shirt.  Is that the most a player has had, or has there been another with 6 or more sponsors on a shirt?

Jeez, I just hate that. I think Furyk is right there with Zach.

Did a google search and came up with this old article from 1999: http://articles.philly.com/1999-06-06/sports/25499279_1_logos-golfers-shirt

Paul Azinger had 7 logos, it says.

Most important takeaway though is that its 16 years old and nothing has really changed.  Doesn't bother me though.  I'd be a big fat liar if I said I wouldn't do the exact same thing.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
