I am working on swallowing in the downswing, and also not straitening the right elbow so early in the downswing. Basically when I get to impact my right arm is already straitened, so my question is to do this correctly do I need to focus more on turning and pivoting to get my shoulders turned more before I start involving my arms? I'm not real sure how to get to this position, do I turn the shoulders earlier and faster? More like this 5sk video? Here is a pic from my lesson, in the position I need to try to be more like.

Do you work at all with a foam ball between your arms? I think @Golfingdad did this and it helped to shallow the shaft and will keep your elbows together.

I have done that drill before, right now I'm doing the closed face drill, it's not so much the shallowing I'm having trouble with but keeping the elbow from straightening to early.

The right arm straightens because it has to straighten for the club can reach the ball. Only way you can hit the ball with the elbow bent like that is to drop the right shoulder down and closer towards the ball so that the right arm doesn't have to reach as far to make contact.

So basically I need to turn my left shoulder forwards the ball faster? Is it that simple?

Right shoulder needs to drop lower and the left shoulder goes up. Same thing as leaning away from the target. You'll probably hit a bunch of fat shots at first because you're used to throwing the right hand towards the ball so you might need to 'feel' like that hand is much more passive.

That is kind of what I have been trying to do since starting to work on this, so basically in the start of the downswing I have been shifting my weight, turning my shoulders, while feeling like I'm not doing anything with my arms. So sounds like I'm on the right track.

From the pic, I would agree that you need to open up more on the downswing, need to get the body more involved. I'd focus on feeling it more with the lower body/hips rather than the shoulders. Copy what Erik is doing in the video.

Thanks I'll work on getting the body turning better.

    • Day 556 - 2026-04-10 Played another 17 holes, this time skipping #11 to pass a group that was still on 14 when we were finishing up. 😛 Not as good as yesterday, but more distracted by the mind's eye.

    • I really do find the masters stuffed shirts to be insufferable. Or is it instufferable?
    • I'm hearing this morning that Robert MacIntyre may be facing some sort of discipline (probably a stern warning) for the finger incident on 15 yesterday.  It dawns on me his upbringing would have been during Tiger's prime years -- he's 29 now, and would have been in elementary school in the early 21st century.  Someone should tell him that the swearing wasn't what made Tiger great at golf.   Or John Daly (or Don January?) or whoever else we associate with both being good at golf and producing choice words on television.
