Everyone talks about which tourney they think is the '5th.' Why not have a 'world wide poll' to find out the one AND actually incorporate it into the schedule? Any reasons this is a good or bad suggestion? ps. I know that I made a mistake in my Ryder vs. Pres. cup thread. I left out the fact that the Europeans never play anyone except U.S.A. so you can imagine your own matches.Cheers,Flash

Everyone does? The only tournament I have ever heard referred to as the 5th major is the Players. I suppose a 5th major could eventually happen but I really hope it doesn't. Major Championship records would be thrown off, the Players (for example) doesn't have the history of the others, and having 5 shots at a major may lessen the overall value of winning a major. There is a special aura around a major and I would have for it to be watered down. So again, I really hope it never happens but the PGA came up with the brilliant idea called the FedEx Cup so I guess anything is possible.

i hate this talk about a 5th major because once they incorporate a 5th someone will coin another tournament as the 6th major. So i think its fine at 4.

I doubt it. Part of the major is history and prestige. The PLAYERS has prestige, but not history. The formerly Western Open has history but not as much prestige.

Also, do you really want people voting on this? Occasionally, you hear about someone's "personal major" to refer to a tournament in their home town. J.J. Henry's win in his hometown last year was referred to as this, I believe. It doesn't mean he won a major. It does mean he won a tournament that was very important to him. Maybe CH3 and Vaughn Taylor lucked out that their hometown tournament is a major.

I may be a little prejudice because of where I live, but I think that The Memorial should be the fifth major. The Masters started out as Bobby Jones' tournament and The Memorial is Jack's tournament. Lately, The Memorial has been a breeding ground for future stars to win.

I agree on the cheapening adding another major...Tennis has 4, golf has 4...what happens if they added a 5th major and then Tiger won the Masters, US, British and PGA? Would he win the Grand Slam if they added another?

If they did, the Players would be the obvious choice since it already has the moniker.

i agree with this...... it is just going to keep going and they are going to want to have 9 majors before its done.

you all make very good points. I was just curious about the matter because the commentators are always saying the 'Players' would be the 5th. and IF they tried for it chances are it would not fly. Thanks for all you responses,Cheers,Flash

Yeah, exactly. There can be plenty of non majors that can be considered big time events. Everyone has their home town which is special to them. Verplank won the Byron Nelson, which was

his fifth major. If Weir ever wins the Canadian Open that will be his fifth major. Nothing wrong with that but I don't like the idea of actually naming a 5th major. You've got quite a few non major high profile tournaments - The Players, Jack's tournament, Arnold's, the world golf events, the tour championship, etc etc.

You just proved shindig's point.

If there is a fifth major, it's the Player's followed by (imo) the BMW Championship (formerly the Western Open) just because it's the 2nd oldest tournament in the U.S. But considering that is my strongest argument for it, that isn't saying much.

there shouldn't be a 5th major, it would make the all the old major records easier to break. I think that the Players is the closest thing to the other majors but there are only 4 majors in my mind
