Well after a bucket at the range today I decided to add my driver and my 5 wood back in for my 8. I need to work more with my wedges particularly out of sand and decide if I want to add a second one to my bag and eliminate one of the long clubs. Oh yeah I will be stressing out about this and tinkering for weeks. And you thought you were bad. If I can get more consistent off the tee and stay away from 3 putts I have a shot to win.

I'm also ambidextrous, and noticed that you are switching between the two sides kind of randomly. I used to use woods and putter righty and irons lefty, but even that didn't work out. Are you actually using both sides? I assume so given you use two gloves. I would pick a side.

Yeah I have played with a different setup every time I've played this year trying to figure out which way to go. I was all left a few weeks ago and had one of my better rounds. I found these right handed ping eye 2 knockoffs I was going to give to a friend but like them so much I have decided to keep them. I played with them Saturday and was very pleased. The difference is they are graphite shafts and I am hitting them longer and straighter than my lefty irons. By a good 15 yards. I could go all right but I have a left shoulder issue restricting my swing with anything longer than a 5 wood. That's why I went left in my long clubs to start the year. The shoulder has improved some but I don't think I will try all right til next year if I'm still playing. I switched to a left handed putter and I feel more comfortable. I'm right eye dominant. I like to chip and pitch with the side I'm putting on so that's why I have the left pw. No matter what I play with I shoot the same every time it seems :-)

If I find a set of left handed ping eye 2s with a graphite shaft close to my Answers that is what I would do. The difference with the graphites especially with the higher irons is just too much for me to go all left now.

We did that at Erie on an east coast outing. So, I was inspired to started playing rounds with just my 6i and now 7i. It's really fun. Pocket an extra ball and a couple short tees. Totally unfettered and free. It's like walking with a walking stick that plays golf. Really fun. . .

You know I was the one that told my one club entry to bring a hybrid for his single club but now I'm not so sure. Do you think he would fair better with a 6 or a 7 club? Which single club would you use for this course?

Admittedly an easier course - but our social group played our normal course with only 4 clubs a couple of months ago and we averaged more than a stroke lower than usual.

If you don't worry about bunkers I'd go with a longer club. Seems like 50 yard pitches will be a lot harder with a longer club especially a hybrid?

next few times out i am going to play with a limited bag. i think the potential to score lower is definitely there.

If possible try to play 3 balls. One with a 5i, one with a 6i and one with a 7i.

If you carry your 7i 135 yards on average, for example, you might get up to 10-15 yards of bounce and roll on a dry fairway. This is potentially 150 yards. So, any par4 up to 450 yards can be reached in three shots. If on wet fairways then 405 yards is reachable in 3 shots. Anything less will leave a pitch shot. The advantage of a shorter club is the ability to pitch and chip more accurately.

If your 7i carries longer, then it's only gets better and easier.

Driver - I can't live without it.

5W - it has mojo - it's a strong lofted 5W

4i

6i

8i

PW

SW

I'd be hitting driver + 6i or 8i onto most of the par 4s depending upon the wind. 6 & 11 I'd need my 8i. On the par 5s, Driver + 5W + PW. Par 3s: 4i to 5W depending upon the wind & elevation. SW, PW, & 8i for chips and SW for bunker play.

this might be my final setup here. i can live without my driver but this course is so long i am going to take my chances. if i add a sw i have to take out either the 5w or 3w. i have been hitting my 3w well so this might be my biggest decision. unless i think i can play out of the sand with my pw. they arent going to be fluffy

If I had to give up one of those wedges, I'd give up the PW.

I use my LW a lot.  Behind the driver and putter it's the most used club in my bag... I miss a lot of greens.  From 60 yards and in I'm using my LW or SW.  The SW mostly for shorter, 25 yards and closer, and chipping when I have a lot of green to work with or some tightly mowed fairway to work with.  So most of the time I'm using the lob wedge for 60 yards and closer and I'm trying to land the ball on the green.

From 90 yards to 65 yards I'm using a SW and trying to land on the green.

From Lowest Stroke Wins advice, I've marked down my 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full distances for my wedges.  That simple to do tip has really helped me with my wedge play.

thanks. my wedge play is weak and i dont really have that much time to improve it all that much in my opinion. i think i have decided on my final selections.

going to lose the LH 3 w, keep  the RH 5w and add the RH sw. this will give me the opportunity to hit off the tee right handed if there is a lot of trouble on the left. my fade with my driver sometimes is a bit too much :) and near the green i will be able to attack from both sides of the ball if need be with my wedges. my 3w is good off the deck but can miss left off the tee like my driver

now who wants to help me map out the holes?  :)

The same way that I'd always play it. Hit driver, then an approach with the most appropriate club. Honestly, it's 8 clubs. You're not going to find that there's much, if any real difference. I really think you're over-thinking it here. Just play your normal game... The only advice that I'll add is that if you think you're stuck between clubs, take the longer of the two. The vast majority of amateurs come up short the vast majority of the time any way.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
