Neither hit was acceptable. And I'm not so sure about the Drouin hit, either. Though I haven't seen that more than two or three times. Nor was the Wilson kneeing.

Don't think anyone's talking about removing the risk of injury.  What at least I am talking about is removing the cheap shotting, the stickwork, the headhunting, etc. that is endemic to the game and that, lo and behold, disappears when the game is truly on the line.

It's not endemic to the game. It is the game. It's always been the game. 

You want to widen the ice, tell players not to touch each other and have a sort of soccer on ice, be my guest. It's might be an interesting thing to watch, but it isn't hockey. People will make their choices to play or not play. Hockey (and football) might disappear and something else may take their place. Let's not kid ourselves. Contact, and aggressive contact at that, has always been the game.

Nah. Crosby said it was after clearing the puck or something. I imagine he's kind of used to it. That particular one stung a bit. Must have caught him funny. He left the ice and said it was numb for awhile. Then contributed to the OT winner one-handed.

Nobody's saying that.

But asking hockey players to risk permanently damaging their brains is way, way beyond what we should ask of them.

I'm in favor of seeing skill. I don't want to watch an almost literal fight to the death.

Except it is not when the game truly is on the line.  You don't see it in the Olympic gold medal game, you don't see it in game 7 of a series, you don't see it in overtime.  Funny.

Huh. You don't think anybody hits in Game 7? 

Fights, especially with modern rules, drop a lot in the playoffs. I suppose there has been bit more effort towards not taking penalties and putting your team in a bad position, but there most definitely has been physical play in Game 7's. Even recent Game 7's.

I specifically referenced stick work, cheapshots, and head hunting -- ALL OF WHICH DISAPPEAR WHEN THE GAME IS ON THE LINE.  I have no problem with clean, hard hitting, steering clear of the head.

That's what we are talking about here. Hitting. Players getting hurt. How terrible it all is and the push towards non-contact hockey.

You are the ones that are very concerned about the safety of the players.

It's kind of a farce. We'll say that hitting is ok, but you can't extend your elbow too much. You can't be too close or too far away from the boards. You better not be off your skates. Don't hit him too high or too low, but if you get him on a spot 3 inches over the logo on the front of the sweater, that's great.

My point is that if we are suspending plays like this, what in the hell is a legal hit anyway. if the Letang hit is a suspension, there probably should have been a couple of hundred other suspensions to boot.

No, we're not talking about hitting. We're talking about head shots (and a briefly expanded circle to include other "intent to injure" types of actions).

You commented after we were discussing hits which resulted in two suspensions and which both targeted the head or had a good amount of head contact with your "back in my day…" routine.

Hits to the head, like the one Letang dished out, are solely on the player.  They need to take responsibility and not target the head.  You can check without lifting up into the player.  

Personally, I think there should be stiffer penalties for late hits.  There is absolutely no need for those hits.  They don't force turnovers, they don't change the scoring chance.  They are solely designed to injure a player.  That is not the principle of the game.  A hit should be used to regain the puck or take away a scoring chance.   When a player doesn't have the puck, those hits are 100% predatory.

Technically yes. It's a penalty that has been rarely called. One of many things that has been left to the discretion of the ref.
