Shot a 76 on Saturday morning. -1 on the first nine and +7 on the second nine. Two factors in the horrible second nine. One, I was rather sick on Saturday but thought I'd be fine to play but I got tired after about 11 holes. The other thing was that my driver lost a plug/weight/something from the bottom of the club. There was a noticible difference in weight and I missed every fairway to the right after my 10th hole.

It was still good to get out and play and get the juices going again. I'm hoping to start playing a bit more...the weather down here has been great for January (in the mid 50's and close to 60 nearly every day).

Fairways and Greens.

Went out on the back 9 after work yesterday. 3 under 32! I'd hate to put some sort of crazy jinx on myself, but, it seems as though I fixed my putting. Made everything from 15 and in. Actually missed one, but it was a tricky, bendy, downhill slider. So I'm not too bent out of shape. 4 birdies and one bogey. If I keep this up, I'll be able to realize my goal for this year of shooting 7 under for a round.

Shot a 49 over 9 today at a small local course. It is short and easy but I am still considering that the equivalent of breaking 100 (nobody dispute that!).

Looking at the scorecard it is pretty funny. Pretty bad actually. I only hit 2 of 6 fairways and no greens in regulation. But 3 of the greens I missed I still put it on the fringe. Heck, maybe even more than 3.

Since putts from the fringe don't count as putts I actually did pretty well in that aspect. one 1-putt, one 3-putt, and seven 2-putts. 18 putts total over 9 holes is unheard of for me. I thought for sure it would be 25. Looks like practice is paying off.

I could have done better, as I know I topped 4 or 5 balls (better than normal) and had some difficulty picking the right club. Everyone and everything I read says always take an extra club but I was pounding the ball and hit over a couple of greens. Part of that is these are new irons and wedges, and the wedges have different lofts than I am used to (was using 52/56/60 and now am using 50/54/58. Another part is I was basing my distances on the simple formula of (driving range distance + 5 = real world distance). Also, I did blow three 3-footers and it also took me 2 tries to get off the beach the one time I hit the trap.

All this tells me I have a full season ahead of me of sub-100 scores. Maybe this game doesn't suck so bad after all.

No dispute here. Once you get used to the new clubs, that 49 becomes 44 and you are breaking 90 instead of 100. Good job. It's crazy how a few shots can add up in a hurry. Take out a couple tops and hit a couple greens and you are there.

Shot a 79 from the blues on the Beman Course at Cannon Ridge this morning. Gorgeous course. Couldn't hit a fairway to save my life, and missed a LOT of GIR's, but saved myself with 29 putts (an all-time best). Guess putting on the carpet in the basement over the winter works, huh?

You're so lucky to be where the courses are OPEN for the winter. I'm up here in Michigan and we have about a foot of snow. I played "2 buckets of balls", that's about the best we can do till May. Congratulations on your -1 and your 76

Last Sunday (2/26/06): 80 with 23 putts !
Whittier Narrows Golf Course (Rosemead, CA) - long par 72 course
Played my second round with the Thunderbirds Golf Club.

Shot a +4 on the front 9 - with a penalty stroke taken for an unplayable lie - really unlucky here!
(HOLE # 3 - 534 yard par 5 -pulled my drive to the left and ended up inside a small bush tree, had to pick up and drop. 2nd shot with my 19*wood was perfectly placed about 100 yards from the pin. 3rd shot with gap wedge was a little fat and ended up in the green side bunker...was able to get up and down from there - BOGIE!)

Shot a +4 on the back 9 - with a double bogie on the 15th hole - bad chip
(HOLE # 15 - 390 yard par 4 - missed my drive and sent the ball soaring up in the sky and landed about 200 yards. I had 190 yards left, slightly up hill so I got my 19* wood and was able to hit it pin high but left side of the green, had a simple chip but got underneath the ball and never made the green, arrgghhh! ...chipped again and made a 6 foot putt - DOUBLE BOGIE!!!!)

Despite of the mistakes, i was still able to shoot a very solid round of 80 on this day w/ 23 putts.
I was really proud of my putting .... 23 PUTTS !!!!!!

I really didn't speak much on this day since I really didn't know anybody. A few "good drive!" or "good shot!" but other than that I was very quiet. This maybe a key for me in shooting a solid round. I was really focused on every shot I made.

Now if I can only improve my Greens Hit in Regulation, I'd be set!

Well, I played about two weeks ago and shot 94. That was my first round in about two months. I think I'm ready to let that one go.

Today, I went out with my friend (Indian Sensation here at the board), and I started off with a triple bogey. Yeah, I figured it might be another 94 on my horizon. I also had a double bogey on the fifth hole. Needless to say, I was +7 after the first five holes. After that, I guess I finally got into that "zone" Ben was talking about the other day. I went +1 over my last 13 holes, including back-to-back birdies on the 7th and 8th.

I shot a 79 for the record. I was very pleased to say the least, especially after starting awful. After the first five holes, I hit my irons like I've never hit them before. Nearly all of them were right on the money.

I missed a few birdie putts in the 10-12 foot range as well, including a missed eight footer at the 18th for a possible 78.

I had 30 putts, which doesn't seem too great. Honestly, I'll take it because my greens in regulation was 9/18 which is pretty solid for me. If I could get it in the 11/18 range, I would be very pleased and would probably shoot in the 70s a lot more.

So all in all, it was a very good round for me. The weather was 75-80 with about 5mph wind. That's almost unheard of here in Oklahoma, but I'll take it.

My goal for 2006 is to enter the single-digit handicap area, and I may just do it with more rounds like this one. I'll have to keep those 94s out of the picture though. :/

WOOOOHOOOOO!!!

I played golf today at my country club. They had temporary greens (duh), but I was surprised how little snow there was laying around. Usually that course holds snow longer than just about anywhere else in Erie county.

At any rate, I played to the temporary pins. Course played just about as long as usual because balls went about four inches into the ground, so even though the flags were 25 yards short of normal, the lack of roll on drives just about compensated for this.

I gave myself everything inside of five feet. I was going to give myself everything inside of six feet, but everything I hit was either eight feet or under five, so it ended up being five feet. I don't make every five footer, of course (though I'm pretty solid inside of three feet), but this rule also removes the possibility of me making a few putts over five feet per round, so I think it just about evens out.

Turns out I had three bogeys and two birdies for a 73! I struck the ball really well. Here's one of my birdies, on the sixth hole, with an 8-iron on the par 5 from about 135 (160 to center of the green).

Some random observations:
  1. I used the r7 460 today. It doesn't have as much trouble hitting the ball high like I thought. I will have to find that thread and post again. I think using non-range balls and a proper tee height - the one in the dome was a tad low - led to the low bullets. I had a good ball flight with the 2 heel/14 toe weight setting. This is "neutral" so I was able to draw and cut the ball at will.
  2. I used the 2006 TM RAC TP irons. I'd put them right between the 735 and the 680s - they're not QUITE as forgiving as the 735s, but they're also not quite as harsh as the 680s. I say "harsh" because I'm laking a better word... I like harsh in irons, in that I like to know where I missed. The TPs have a more.... uniform feel than I typically like, but without being quite as forgiving as the 735s (where the uniform feel is okay because the shots are uniform too). Either way, they're right there in the realm of clubs I like - good feedback, etc. I could hit high and low shots, I could work the ball, and the distance seemed good.
  3. Despite being soggy, I was able to finish 18 holes. I credit the MyTPI workouts. Last year, at the beginning of the year, even walking 9 holes in dryer weather was tough. This year I finished 18 in soggy, soggy conditions (walking six miles through mud-like grass is a lot tougher than walking 6 miles on solid turf). I was pretty tired, but after 9 I was still pretty well off. I was surprised how dry the course was - very little standing water - but still soggy enough to lose a few balls that buried six inches or more in the goopy areas.
  4. I hit a few shots fat because I was standing too close to the ball. But otherwise, and despite not really swinging a golf club since November, I played pretty well. Crisp contact, worked the ball, etc. Last year I couldn't stop hitting fat shots and I blamed the mats at the dome for their poor feedback. I think it's true.
  5. I'm glad my game is good enough at this point that I won't embarrass myself when I go to the TaylorMade event near Augusta on April 2/3.
That's all I can think to say at this point. The course looked to be in pretty good shape, but we've had a really mild winter. Very little snow mold, very little damage anywhere. It should open up pretty quickly and be in good shape from the get-go, and that's good.

But mostly, WOOHOO! I think I might get the chance to play tomorrow, too.

P.S. That's a PW in the picture, for measurement's sake. The shot was hit with an 8I from 135 or so.

Further note on the 460: I don't like the sound much at all. Too much "aluminum baseball bat" and not much "powerful crack" for my tastes.

beautiful day in NJ - mid 60's played at the Architects course (on the NJ/PA border) - decent shape, a bit wet, but not bad at all. The greens were un-puttable though, ball was bouncing all over the place. I was hitting the ball very good and the 77 with 3 3-putts is a proof for it. Even if it was 97 - mid March and playing in a short sleeve shirt - gotta love it !

That's the same impression I had from the 425. Sound is awful. It was bad with "old" r7 already, with the new design it got worse.

Minus well we'd be using the FT3

I played my home course today Greyhawk golf club ( www.greyhawkgolf.com)in LaGrange, OH today. Voted number 10 in Golf Digest's courses you can play.

It was 50 degrees and very windy. I played the white tees (69.5/126) because of the wind and wetness of the course.

I shot 84 with 4 double bogies, 28 putts and 4 lip outs (ouch!!!)

I'm happy with that considering It's my first time out since January and the greens were pretty bumpy.

Looks like a nice place. May have to make the trip there to see it and play it myself this summer!

    • @colin007, in terms of realistic sci-fi, its the best ever. They actually had an astrophysicist consult on the movie to be as accurate as possible with what we know about the universe.  For like dystopian, Blade Runner is probably king. Action/suspense is probably Alien/Aliens. Though Starship Troopers is fantastic. The Matrix is amazing.
    • Day 4 (August 14).  Full swing in my indoor practice room;  6-iron, off a mat, into a net.  Focus was on what I believe was my priority piece at last lesson (which, admittedly, was almost three years ago, due to absence).  I hit about a dozen balls this morning before going into the office.  (Also, errata to yesterday:  9 of the 12 coins were picked up on the second or third go around -- you can't pick up one on the first go around for that drill)
    • Watched The Gentlemen, took a little bit to get into it, but very good Guy Ritchie movie.  Collin Farrell and Hugh Grant were great. Give it a birdie.
    • Played in the Rhode Island CC Senior Member guest, my partner and I won the tournament. 2-day Stableford format, we ended with 104 points, won by 7. Points include 2 holes on each 9, where both players score count, can make up some points if you both play well on those holes.  @DaveP043has played a similar format (I played with Dann from RICC).
    • Played Wannamoisett CC on Monday.  What a neat old Donald Ross course, Par 69.  The conditions were immaculate, might be one of the best maintained courses, I've played.
